Newman: Modern times, classic sounds.

Steve Newman talks about his latest Newman album and the Butterfly Tattoo material and gives some advice to new bands and AOR fans out there!

Hi Steve….our first ever interview – thanks for taking the time! What are you up to right now?
I am currently in the studio going through the Butterfly Tattoo material. I'm not sure who this is going to be released through, obviously Escape will have first choice on this. I'll let you know what happens.

Congrats on the new album - sounding as good, if not better, than ever.
Thank you Andrew.

There's been a 3 year delay between albums this time around, but you haven't been sitting around the whole time.
You recorded a set of songs under the title Butterfly Tattoo. What happened to those songs and why weren't they released?

Yes, that's right, I was involved in doing something a little different with regards to Butterfly Tattoo. I got together two other musicians, a bass player, and a drummer and we spent around 2 months in the studio writing songs with the intention that this was to become the next Newman album. We started to actively write together and could see almost immediately that this was going to be nothing like any other Newman album! After the songs were more or less completed I presented them to Khalil, and we both came to the conclusion that this was too different to be released under the Newman name. I am currently in the studio re-recording some of the parts from the sessions and hopefully this will be released in the very near future.

How far could the style really be from what you are best known for?
Everything I do will have an element of me in it, there was a lot more involvement from the other guys and this is really what took it in a different direction. It is very different from Newman, so I've been told by the few people that have heard some of the songs.

So you decided to start over with a new set of songs - a set that sets a new high standard for you! What did you have in mind after deciding to start over?
Well, I finished the Butterfly Tattoo material and then went through a re-location to another part of the South Coast of England. I spent around 6 months or so setting up my new studio, so when it came to sitting down and writing for the new album I had a few ideas buzzing around in my head.

Are you happy with the results?
Yes, I am, I was glad that I could spend the time in my own studio recording the guitar, keys, and vocal parts. I always felt that, particularly with the vocals, I needed more time to concentrate on getting them right. The previous albums have been pretty tough schedule wise. 3 days to sing 12 songs with backing vocals too, is a tall order!! So I think the vocal has benefited most.

Tracks like Last Known Survivors and Save Me Tonight are prime examples of British AOR. Who are your musical influences - now and as you grew up?
I started listening to my brother's record collection when I was growing up, bands like Led Zeppelin, and Free. Later I really got into the American bands such as Dokken, Ratt, and obviously Bon Jovi. I first saw Strangeways when they supported Europe in England, they became a very big influence, as did other bands such as Night Ranger and FM. I think that my approach to song writing changed when I heard Jeff Paris, and personally I don't think that anyone has come close to him as a songwriter.
My influences now are quite varied. I have been listening to the Foo Fighters, Good Charlotte, and Hundred Reasons recently. Although I still think that there are a lot of good melodic rock bands such as Urban Tale, Pride and Grand Illusion.

The sound of the new album is a little tougher - the guitar plays a more prominent and direct role in the music. Was that a conscious decision by yourself?
Not really, I think that in each album, the guitar seems to have been gradually becoming louder !! hahaha.
I always try to look at the guitar parts fairly carefully, and if it is required then it gets recorded. I would agree that over the course of the past 4 albums things have got heavier!!

You also use a new band line-up on this record, while playing many of the instruments yourself. I think this was a great idea and the benefits can be heard on the record. What was behind that decision?
I felt that after "One Step Closer" and "Dance In The Fire" I wanted to have a little more control over the Drums and Bass. On the previous two albums these had been recorded over in Canada and I particularly wanted to keep this in the UK this time around. To have Pete Jupp play drums on the album was a great thrill as FM was one of the bands I used to be really into. Both Pete, and Mike Brooks (Bass) put down some great rhythm tracks for the new album.

It was also produced by you with Pete Coleman. How did he influence the sound of the record and did you enjoy the more hands on experience?
It was great to meet up with Pete, and I think he done a great job engineering the material. I always love being in and around studios, in the passed few years I've tended to get quite involved in the technological side of the recording process, so it's always nice to see how someone like Pete works.

You've recorded 3 albums now for Escape Music - but I wasn't even aware you had a forth - a debut album for Point Music. Can you still get that anywhere, I need a copy?!!
hahaha, I think they're probably giving them away somewhere!! No, seriously, I think the album is still available from Point Music in Germany.

Are you happy with the musical development the Newman albums have made? Anything you would like to change or do differently?
Yes, when ever you have finished recording an album there are always things you wish you could have done better, but that is the learning curve. I think that every artist improves with each album. Sure, there are many things that, looking back, I wished I'd done differently, but then again these albums are really snapshots of a particular time in my life, the process I went through to record them, and the emotions I was feeling at the time.

With what happened to Butterfly Tattoo in mind - what next for Steve Newman? What will you do for the next studio album, presumably next year some time?
Well, as I've said, the Butterfly Tattoo material should be released sometime soon hopefully when it is all completed.
I travelled out to Sweden about a month ago to work with Anders Rydholm of Grand Illusion, that was a very productive visit, and hopefully the songs we wrote together should be appearing on an album at some stage.
I will start working the next Newman album towards the end of this year hopefully. I promise it won't be as long coming as the last one!!! hahaa

Any chance we might see Newman playing a few gigs this or next year?
Yes, I would really like to do some shows in 2004, we'll have to see.

Do you see any one band or artist really doing a great job out there promoting themselves, making great music that inspires you?
At the moment I think it is very difficult without the funding of a major company. I think that websites like yours, and the internet is the way to go with regards to promotion on a wide scale. This is certainly true in the UK at the moment as there is no real avenue, certainly for melodic rock bands, to tour or become successful in that way.

Can you tell us a little about the artwork for the new CD? What is it about? LOL...I personally think it's very cool, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Ok, I was looking at imagery for the new album, I already had the title in mind. I saw this image and thought that it fitted the lyrics in the title track really well. It's really someone stopping and saying "hey, everything is moving too fast, it's time to stop, and take a look around, and give something back" I think that as the world moves faster it is becoming less emotional, we see it in our music particularly, manufactured bands, similar to fast food really!!

Where does the subject matter for your songs come from?
Many different places, I tend to write what I feel at the time. If I am moved by a certain event, or story, then I usually write about it.

How do you go about writing songs in general? What's your modus operandi?
It really depends, it can start form a vocal melody idea, or maybe a guitar riff. I don't really have any set way of writing, although I use Cakewalk software to construct the song as an aid to developing the idea.

What would you really like to see happen to the melodic rock scene in the UK and in general worldwide?
It would be great to see it all came back to the scale that it was in the eighties. I think it will, but it will be packaged differently, probably in the form of a boy band!! haha.
There are already bands coming through, here in the UK, that have a certain AOR quality about them, only time will tell.
Even within the AOR fraternity I would like to see people start accepting some of the newer bands, I think the artists that were around in the eighties, playing this kind of music sometimes get treated a little too God like. I'm not saying any more!! haha

Anything you can recommend to new artists coming through and looking for a break?
I think if you are a melodic rock band, especially in the UK, then you could approach someone like Now and Then or Escape Music. The web is always a good place to start promoting the band as well. It's very difficult to tour and become known through that these days, and finding places to play is a nightmare. I would always say that with any band, make sure you all want the same thing, and get the best possible musicians. Just write what you feel, and try not to be like anyone else, people will always compare you to someone anyway, and you'll probably find that their influence has come out in your music.

Thanks for your time Steve, anything you would like to add?
Thanks Andrew, and thanks to all your readers and fans that have bought the previous albums. Good luck with the continuing success of melodicrock.com!

Thanks Steve, appreciate your time.

There is a sense of comfort when diving into a new NEWMAN album. Much like Ten, Vega (to name just two), you know exactly what you are going to get, and Steve Newman never disappoints. With a history dating back to his debut in 1997 that stretches over 2 decades and 15 releases, you are always going to have albums that fans rate more highly than others and differing opinions of just which those albums are.

But one thing you cannot deny is that NEWMAN delivers something great on every record. And of course, ‘Ignition’ is no exception. There a few twists in the tail, the electro-Def Leppard-groove of the title track is certainly one, but mostly this is just classic Newman.

Another collection of strong, classic melodic rock.

AOR HEAVEN sign UK Melodic Rock hopefuls ATLAS; new best of release from NEWMAN coming on September 28!

In 1997 Singer, songwriter Steve Newman formed the band Newman and since 1998 have been producing consistently high quality albums filled with hook laden songs and thought provoking lyrics. Today, the band consists of Steve Newman (Vocals, Guitar), Pete Newdeck on Drums, Shaun Bessant (Guitar, Vocals), Paul Boyle (Keyboards, Vocals), Dave Bartlett (Bass, Vocals).

On September 21st, 2018 NEWMAN will now release a double CD with 34 of their finest songs on AOR Heaven to celebrate the band’s 20th recording anniversary. Steve Newman says: “So here we are again, oh, but hang on, we’re another 10 years (after the decade I release) down the line on this musical journey. I can’t believe how quickly those years have gone by!! I wanted to keep the concept for this collection the same as the previous release, so once again, I am proud and excited to present to you another double CD re-performed and re-recorded featuring 35 songs from 2007 right through to 2017. 20 years since Newman first released the debut album, and I still get the same excitement and joy from recording and performing music. In the last 10 years the live band has gone from strength to strength and I am now surrounded by a bunch of really good friends who bring these songs to life whenever we play. My drive to write and perform is a selfish quest, however, my inspiration is you, everyone that supports my music, and the wonderful compliments I receive on a daily basis, thank you for your belief, this one is for you.” ~ Steve Newman

Disc 1 features 17 songs from the 2007 album “Primitive Soul” through “The Art Of Balance”, “Under Southern Skies”, “Siren”, and finally the 2015 album “The Elegance Machine”.
Disc 2 features another 17 songs, some that were written and even recorded, but not included on the final releases, songs that were written for other artists and 2 songs that were originally released as Japanese bonus tracks. There are some songs, as before, that were “works in progress” especially recorded for this release and also another 6 songs from the “Aerial” sessions.

ATLAS is a Melodic Rock band from the North of England that is comprised of 5 young musicians, i.e. James Thorley (Keyboards, programming and percussion), John Moss (Lead Guitars), Howie Little (Lead Guitars), Chris Redfearn (Bass Guitar) and Craig Wells (Lead Vocals). Keyboard player Thorley founded the band in early 2017 with the intention to create a band that centered its roots around the AOR and Melodic Rock genre whilst delving into other areas of Hard Rock, Metal, Progressive and even Jazz. 5 keyboard demos were produced by Thorley during the first few months of 2017.

The name ‘Atlas’ came from the working title for these demos, which would soon be molded into the songs heard on the bands’ debut EP ‘World In Motion’. ATLAS drew heavily on influences stemming from the AOR classic standards of Toto and Journey to the modern era of Work of Art and W.E.T with subtle progressive elements of Dream Theater mixed in to forge the early sound heard throughout their EP. The recording and mixing duties fell upon keyboard player James Thorley. Sam Millar of UK rock band Bigfoot contributed to the backing vocals on this EP which got self-released through their band camp website in late August 2017. The end of 2017 found the band achieve three awards from AOR Underground (A feature of Powerplay magazine) for ‘Independent album of year 2017’ for their release of the EP ‘World in Motion’,  ‘Best Newcomer of 2017’ and ‘Song of the year’ with ‘Lost in The Moment’. This momentum and growing social media following provided the stepping-stone for the bands next endeavor. With strong motivation and after almost a year of working together as a band they were now eager to start collaborating on new material using the stronger aspects of their EP as a cornerstone.

The writing sessions for the debut album officially started in December 2017 and continued for 8 months. The band were given an opportunity in June to have a break from the album production when they were approached by UK Melodic Rock band Vega to open up for them and AOR Heaven rockers Midnite City in support of their latest album tour. Rob Evans of Powerplay Magazine had helped the band get in contact with Georg Siegl, the founder of AOR Heaven, and after discussions between the band and Siegl a contract was drawn up.
The album name ‘In Pursuit of Memory’ reflects the nature and themes of the songs heard throughout the album. With a common theme throughout the album being self-reflection, healing and learning from mistakes one has made; with lyricists Thorley, Moss and Wells all penning at least one track centered on those themes. The album was recorded and engineered by keyboard player James Thorley at his studio ‘The Woodshed”. Thorley also took on the role of the producer as he did on the bands previous self released EP.

Sam Millar of Bigfoot provided ‘guest vocals’ on the album as well; his vocal harmony contributions can be heard throughout most of the tracks and add a much desired AOR factor that the band often desire in their songs. Christoffer Borg (Taste, Art Nation) was chosen as the mixing and mastering engineer on ‘In Pursuit of Memory’. Borg’s credit’s, which include Anthrax, Evergrey & Kee Marcello gave the group confidence that he would be able to do the variety of songs they had written the justice it sonically deserved.

AOR Heaven Announces Sept. 22 Releases - NEWMAN & MARTIN EDOFF

Artist:

AOR Heaven‘s September 22 releases from Martina Edoff and Newman:

In 1997 Singer, songwriter Steve Newman formed the band Newman and since 1998 has been producing consistently high quality albums filled with hook laden songs and thought provoking lyrics and released 10 studio albums and one best of compilation up to today. The previous release, "The Elegance Machine", was released  in 2015 and the band returned to the road with shows in Europe and their first UK headline tour.

Steve Newman continued to write throughout 2016, songs, of which some have featured on various artists releases, and some which are still to come. It was within this writing process that Newman started to piece together the ideas which would become his latest release, and 11th studio album.

"Aerial" now  features 12 tracks that return to the huge chorus's, maintaining the high quality production values that have been prevalent  over the last albums. But this record, above all, is all about the songs, you could say it's an unashamed AOR/Melodic Rock record and follows that rule across all 12 songs to give the listener a very consistent album. Once again Steve Newman has teamed up with Rob McEwen (drummer for the last nine Newman albums), the album also features long time friend Mark Thompson-Smith lending his vocals to "Fear Of Flying" and " Two Sides". Finally the mastering was taken care of by none other than Harry Hess (Harem Scarem) at H Bomb Mastering.

Track list: 01. Fear Of Flying, 02. Don't Wake The Lion, 03. Can't Stop Loving You, 04. Life To Remember, 05. High Tonight (Aerial), 06. Vertigo (Leap Of Faith), 07. Two Sides, 08. I Am Your Man, 09. Always Strangers, 10. Nothing Left, 11. Still Bleeding, 12. You Don't Know Me

The self-titled MARTINA EDOFF album was released in 2014, and nearly a year later, the second record called “Unity” took her and her band on a successful North American tour in September 2015.

She soon went to Argentina and performed for 6000 new fans as an opening act for Tarja Turunen. The tour went on to share the stage with The Winery Dogs on their European tour in early 2016. The UK audience welcomed her the same year for a mini tour and she later returned to the Rockingham Festival to perform.
Now she's back with the third record “We Will Align” which will be released on AOR Heaven on September 22.

Amongst the already acquired fans is the respected English rock journalist Dave Ling, who discovered MARTINA EDOFF’s eponymous titled solo debut, celebrated her with a full page article in Classic Rock AOR Magazine and put her album on his playlist, describing it as ”Stirring, confident melodies from an unashamed Swedish rock chick!” The great reviews kept on coming in from all over the world.

Together with her former co-producer and co-writer Jona Tee (H.E.A.T), Martina decided to work with him on the third album. In late 2016 the artist started to write on some new songs and found more co-writers who completed the music in the way she was looking for, such as Jonas Törnqvist (Deathriders, Bleed The Hunger, TreasureLland), Erik Mårtensson (Eclipse, Nordic Union, W.E.T), Benny Jansson (Ride The Sky), Billy Sheehan (Mr Big, The Winery Dogs), Jona Tee (H.E.A.T).

“We Will Align” is a melodic hard rock album with a bluesy note along with powerful pieces and it goes back to the roots where EDOFF has got her influences. The strong melodies are always there such as her powerful voice. The musicians are the best to find and they are by her side in the studio as well on stage, i.e. Björn Höglund (drums), Nalle Påhlsson (bass), Stefan Bergström (guitar) and Jona Tee (keyboard/ hammond and production). The mixing went through the hands of the legendary Tobias Lindell.

Track list: 1. Turn our pages, 2. Champions, 3. Alive, 4. We will align, 5. Lay down your arms, 6. Face the mirror, 7. Set you free, 8. I’m invincible, 9. Truth came knocking, 10. Brand new world
Discography: Martina Edoff (2014), Unity (2015), We Will Align (2017)

Another of the hard working regulars of this scene is one Steve Newman. And he’s consistently delivered quality music year after year and is at it once again on The Elegance Machine.
Picking up where they left off with Siren, this album holds the same musical outlook that The Art Of Balance and Under Southern Skies both did.
So you know what you are going to get – a collection of punchy, guitar and keyboard driven melodic rock songs, with Steve’s distinctive voice and his layered harmony style choruses.

And as usual the album mixes uptempo harder tunes like The Suit, Illuminate and Confess alongside commercial melodic rock such as The Elegance Machine, Pretender Surrender and Send Us Salvation.
Moody tracks such as Halo and She Walks In Silence are balanced between the appearance of two cracking AOR numbers Don’t Stay Lonely and One Good Reason.
What I’m really enjoying on this album is the warmth of Steve’s voice on a few of the tracks (The Elegance Machine and Prayer For Apollo in particular).
Speaking of which, Prayer For Apollo is brilliant – this is a quirky track with a haunting intro and a brilliant anthemic chorus. A definite instant highlight.

Another winning slice of British classic melodic rock and AOR from one of the genre’s most reliable writers. If you own one, you must own them all. Now go get this latest opus.

NEWMAN TO RELEASE RE-RECORDED FIRST ALBUM AS A LIMITED EDITION

Since the first album was released in 1997, Newman have established themselves as one of the leading UK melodic rock artists over the last 17 years. Signing to Escape Music in 1998, they subsequently released albums "One Step Closer", "Dance In The Fire", "Sign of The Modern Times" and "Heaven Knows" to great acclaim. Moving from Escape Music in 2007 Steve Newman created his own label Chrome Dome and produced another 3 albums, "Primitive Soul", "Decade", and in 2010, the well-received "The Art Of Balance". After successfully rejuvenating the live band and playing shows in the UK including Cambridge Rock and the Firefest Festival, the album "Under Southern Skies" was released through AOR Heaven in 2011. Further live dates ensued both in the UK, Europe, and the US. In 2013 "Siren" was released to a great response, many stating this as one of the best Newman albums to date.

"I've been extremely lucky to have had the chance to release so many albums over the years, and work with some great artists, little did I know it would come to this when I was recording the first album. I actually said to myself at the time, if this is the only album I record then I will be proud of my achievement. So I can look back now, 11 albums later, and be truly humbled by all the fans I have around the world that support and believe in my music. Over the years I have had so many requests to re-release or re-record the first album, so finally, here it is !!."

"I certainly had great fun recording this again, as I did the first time, and it brought back so many memories of those times up at Universal Sound in London. I hope that if you were fortunate enough to purchase the original album then this is a good trip down memory lane or , if you are listening to these songs for the first time, they will create some great future memories. In any respect, thank you for listening, sharing, and being a part of this journey."
