MAGNUM Deliver 'Sacred Blood & Divine Lies' February 26

For a musician like Tony Clarkin who composes constantly, viewing and selecting the material he has written is always one of the most significant moments during the creation process of a new Magnum album. On the one hand it’s a luxury to have the opportunity to separate the wheat from the chaff and to be in a position to use only the strongest numbers. On the other hand it’s also a difficult process, because after all the creator of those songs has grown fond of every single one of them.

“I usually start composing for our next album immediately after the release of the previous one,” Clarkin explains. “When Escape From The Shadow Garden arrived at the stores in March 2014, my thoughts had already turned to our next recording.” Clarkin wrote 25 new songs during the subsequent months, the most promising 13 of which were selected for Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies.

Ten of those tracks made it onto the new album, the other three onto the included bonus CD. “It would have been too much of a shame to disregard them,” Clarkin reckons, “particularly since our fans want to know after every release what happened to the rest of the material. This time they’re getting it in addition to the album tracks.”

The ten numbers on the regular album present Magnum from their most rocking side again. The epicentre of this soundquake features, along with frontman Bob Catley’s charismatic voice, Clarkin’s awesome riff and lead guitar which provides the all-important substructure to the songs. Courtesy of his driving style, Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies counts without a doubt among the group’s most dynamic releases. Clarkin: “I’ve always been into rock numbers. But it isn’t necessarily that easy to write really good rock material. It’s much more simple to compose a ballad. But that dynamic pace suits Magnum perfectly.”

Clarkin is referring mainly to the title track and opener of the new album. “I feel that Bob delivered it really well,” Clarkin praises his vocalist Bob Catley. “As far as I am concerned, ´Sacred Blood Devine Lies` is definitely likely to join the ranks of great Magnum classics.” So it comes as no surprise that Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies with its significant message became the album title.

Of course there are more highlights on this thoroughly powerful recording. Clarkin was inspired to write the anthemnic ´Gypsy Queen` at a concert in St. Petersburg, a city which deeply impressed him with its unique atmosphere. By no means less memorable is ´Your Dreams Won’t Die´ which is based on a piano chord sequence and could lead you to believe that Magnum have put to music their own band philosophy. “To me, the title and lyrics have an almost religious depth,” says Clarkin. “There’s a saying that somebody is not forgotten if their name is remembered.” A successful rock group like Magnum should be entitled to eternal renown, shouldn’t it? Says Clarkin: “You want my honest opinion? I don’t think that far ahead, but of course it’s a nice notion that this band may always be remembered because so many people love our music.”

And last but not least: Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies closes with a song which surprised even Clarkin. “I liked the general sound of ´Don’t Cry Baby` from the start,” he remarks. “Although I initially didn’t have a lyric, the melody kept going through my head, as well as the chorus with acoustic and e-guitars plus piano. We even kept the drums from the demo version because our drummer Harry James liked them so much. He said: ´I love it the way it is. We shouldn’t change a thing about it.`”

So here it is: Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies - again with a fantastic cover by Rodney Matthews - has been scheduled for release by Steamhammer/SPV on 26 February 2016 as digipak version incl. DVD, 2LP coloured version, CD and Download and will you don’tt need to be a clairvoyant to predict this be loved by the band’s fans. That Clarkin will probably already have his mind on Magnum’s next release by that time well, thatt’s another story.

British rock legends Magnum's piano and keyboard maestro Mark Stanway has now added the word author to his already more than impressive CV.
With 'Close To The Mark' nearly 40 years of behind the scenes fun and madness from the world of Rock comes to life from the pen of someone who was there and lived to tell the tales!

Stanway has played and toured with some rock giants over the years and as well as Magnum stories a plenty, his times with the likes of the late, great Phil Lynott, Robert Plant and M3 Classic Whitesnake (to name a few) are covered.

Mark has written the book in its entirety so there are no second or third hand accounts of events. It is straight from the horse's mouth and we are talking thoroughbred. As well as all that, there are over 170 photographs, including many previously unseen ones.

Since reforming, Magnum has kept an increasingly busy recording/touring schedule that bands half their age would be envious of. The band’s last studio album was Escape From The Shadow Garden, which has spawned this document of the tour that followed.
There are very few heritage bands that have a fan base willing to indulge the band with a set list heavy with new songs rather than relying on milking the classics to within an inch of their life.

But each album and each tour sees Magnum change things up to showcase the new material and the fans lap it up, and here is no different.
The entire first half of this live album is all new tracks and I have to say, they translate into the live arena beautifully. There’s energy there, there’s passion and conviction in the delivery.
Live Til You Die and the ultra-heavy Dance Of The Black Tattoo shine; while the second half of the set includes the legendary All England’s Eyes, Kingdom of Madness, Les Morts Dansant (another stunning version), plus a just brilliant version of Vigilante and an iconic 11 minute How Far Jerusalem.

Bob Catley might sound a little croakier than once upon a time, but his tone and delivery still capture my attention and respect every time.
The band packs a punch as usual and the recording quality and the live mix is really impressive.

Another memorable live release from one of Britain’s great melodic rock acts. A rousing delivery of some new and old makes for a really enjoyable ride.
Essential for all long time fans I would say.

MAGNUM New Digital & Vinyl Single Out November 14

The British melodic hard rock group MAGNUM have confirmed new release dates for the upcoming single "On Christmas Day" on Steamhammer / SPV. "On Christmas Day" is a re-recorded new version of the same song, which appeared on the original version of the 1994 album "Rockart". The single contains a long version of the song and a shorter radio edit and on top a brand new recording of the song named "Born To Be King"

The digital version will be available worldwide (except UK) on November 14th, the 10" vinyl version in Germany on November 14th and Europe (except UK) on November 17th.
In the UK the digital version and the 10" version will be available on December 1st!

Guitarist and songwriter Tony Clarkin tells how it all happened: "It was Olly Hahn at SPV/Steamhammer who said that he a great idea, and could I write a Christmas song? I replied we had already had done that in the past and told him about "On Christmas Day" and that it was on the "Rockart" album. So if he wanted to check that out to see if it was suitable because it`s not the normal Christmas song that people would expect. I had not heard it myself for a long long time. We were in Germany at the time and so we all sat round the computer to listen to the track and we were all impressed and I was really looking forward to re doing it. That's really the story of how it came about, but I also thought "Born To Be King" could also fit with On Christmas Day as a strong B side for the whole package.!"

Bass player Alan Barrow, who created the single’s artwork, explains that the idea for the cover "was based on some documented facts about the men in the trenches around Christmas in 1914."  Carol singing was said to have been heard going back and forth between the trenches from both sides. Some documents state that on Christmas day a small amount of soldiers ventured in to ‘no mans land’ where they exchanged food, cigarettes and souvenirs. There are some reports that a game of football was also played.”

The digital version contains a long version and a radio edit of the song and another track named "Born To Be King". The digital version will be available worldwide on October 24th together with the limited 10" vinyl version.

Guitarist and songwriter Tony Clarkin tells how it all happened: "It was Olly Hahn at SPV/Steamhammer who said that he a great idea, and could I write a Christmas song? Bass player Alan Barrow, who also created the artwork, explains the idea behind the cover: "Based on was a series of widespread, unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas 1914, during World War I. It`s documented that German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches. On Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides independently ventured into "no man's land", where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. Several meetings ended in carol-singing. Troops from both sides would also play games of football with one another."
