STEVE VAI and MARTIN TURNER (former Wishbone Ash) guest on episode 167 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

In the episode's first interview guitarist Steve Vai discusses the upcoming Tony MacAlpine benefit show, his time with David Lee Roth & Whitesnake, the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Eat 'Em And Smile album, bee keeping, working with Ozzy Osbourne, his guilty pleasure desire to join the Alice Cooper band and much more. Our second interview is with former Wishbone Ash member, Martin Turner, who talks about his new album Written In The Stars, classic Wishbone Ash albums, twin guitars and much more.

Quotes from the Steve Vai interview:

"I started getting full of myself and to David Coverdale's credit he tolerated it all."

On almost joining Ozzy Osbourne's band: "I love Ozzy, but can you picture me touring with him? I can't see myself playing Paranoid every night."

"When it came to the Ozzy thing, saying that it would be step backwards is too strong, but I'd done it. I'd been with the big rock stars doing that kind of thing. My instincts said, 'no no no'."

On wanting to play with Alice Cooper: "I would have to say yeah... I could do this for a while (like a tour). How cool would that be?"

From EMERSON LAKE & PALMER
Carl Palmer’s ELP legacy performing EMERSON LAKE & PALMER and more

Carl Palmer is a drummer’s drummer. A consummate professional, a brilliant technician and a dynamic showman, he has thrilled listeners and audiences alike for nearly four decades with some of music’s most memorable bands including Atomic Rooster, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Asia and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Along the way his dazzling speed and mastery of the drums, combined with his infectious stage personality, have secured for him a respected place in history as one of Rock and Roll’s greatest drummers.

From WISHBONE ASH original founding member MARTIN TURNER plays the music of WISHBONE ASH.

With millions of album sales and concert attendances worldwide, Wishbone Ash’s heritage as one of the most enduring and best loved British rock acts is assured. Over four decades later, the enduring music of the classic marks of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Argus, Pilgrimage, There’s the Rub, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist and key creative force, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums, with his passionate vocal delivery, songwriting ability, keen melodic sense and production values being a key ingredient in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to perform the band’s best loved works with his current line-up. Martin Turner plays the music of Wishbone Ash features guitarists Ray Hatfield and Danny Willson, and drummer Tim Brown and remains faithful to the original Wishbone Ash blueprint.

The Strawbs comprise David Cousins, along with lead guitarist Dave Lambert, and the astonishingly versatile Chas Cronk, who together formed the front-line of the classic 1970s line-up of the band. As they move gracefully into their fifth decade of music making, it is still difficult to categorise the unique sound that has made them Britain’s most successful international progressive folk-rock band.
The band started life as the Strawberry Hill Boys playing bluegrass, before moving into the mainstream by making the first Strawbs album with Sandy Denny in 1967, a year before she recorded her first album with Fairport Convention. The recording with Sandy attracted the attention of A&M Records in Los Angeles who signed Strawbs as the first British band on the label! Strawbs has a devoted fan base that continues to grow on the strength of albums like Grave New World, Bursting At The Seams, Hero And Heroine, and Ghosts, and classic songs such as Lay Down, A Glimpse Of Heaven, and Benedictus.

Martin Turner and Friends, featuring Ted Turner and Laurie Wisefield, release
The Garden Party 2 CD - OUT NOW!

MARTIN TURNER co-founded WISHBONE ASH in 1969 and continues to play the heyday recordings to this day, with his own band.

This is a PRIVATE RECORDING of a set which includes rare tracks and classic performances to an invited audience of the core fan base with a truly special finale.  This is the first release of this recording.

THE GARDEN PARTY was a unique one-off concert from 2012 with classic era members TED TURNER and LAURIE WISEFIELD coming on stage to play.

Martin Turner said “There was a truly wonderful atmosphere on and off the stage that evening.  It was as if it had been written in the stars and, of course, it was a blue moon that night as well!  The Garden Party certainly reminded the four of us that we do have a very special rapport both as musicians and as people - something thatt our audience clearly picked up on that evening.”

Ted Turner commented “This was a very special day, filled with affection, friendship and love.” and Laurie Wisefield added “It’s great the music is living on, and that there are people who still want to hear it.  I think, above all, there was a lot of integrity in our music and that comes through.
