Paul Shortino - Jimmy Crespo (2000)

Good of you to call Paul, how are thing's going with you and your new partner? Me and Jimmy are really hitting it off well and we're going to have a great big future together, he's a great player. Tell me how you two together? We got together, actually through a mutual friend of ours who used to play drums for Jefferson Airplane if you can believe that. Joey Cummings. We did a gig together. He gave me a call and Jimmy a call and that's how we hooked up. From that moment on it was like love at first sight. I fell in love with his guitar playing and he fell in love with my voice. We've taken it to a new level and in about a month we're really gonna let the cat out of the bag on what's really going on. I know you'll be pleasantly happy and a lot of people will with what we're coming out with. So that's how we hooked up and we've been rehearsing and we've been working on the new record. It's gonna be very heavy, very guitar and vocal orientated. Some of the good old hard rock coming back. Tell ...

Philip Bardowell (2005)

Philip Bardowell: In The Cut with a fresh voice for AOR Philip Bardowell delivers his most straight forward melodic rock release to date in partnership with Tommy Denander. Hi Philip, I hope you saw my review of the album, it got quite a rave. Congratulations on the end result. Yes. Indeed I did. Thanks for the review and the kind words. While you have been cast as a melodic rock singer, it certainly isn't or hasn't been your total upbringing has it? Not really. I enjoy singing all styles. I grew up singing rock and gospel music in church. I've always been drawn to bluesy, soulful singers, so my natural style tends to follow along those lines. I even sang show tunes in various musicals and I sing Jazz as well. In the Beach Boys, I really had to tone down my natural inclination towards blues/soul to accurately capture the Beach Boy's sound and in Criss (my band with Peter Criss) I was really stretching my voice to cut the hard rock vocal style that the music called for. In The Cut I would say, is easily your most straight ahead rock release for your career to date. What ...

Plunge (2005)

Plunge: Jump into this new band... Plunge frontman Mike talks about the band's debut album on Atenzia Records and working with SR-71. Hi Mike....Plunge is a new name on the scene - can you introduce the band to us and tell us a little of the history behind the band? Plunge is a new name to the scene in Europe but we actually started the band back in 1995 in Baltimore Maryland. It's your typical story where a bunch of kids from the neighborhood with a love for music picked up some instruments and then we were off. When the music bug bites ya, it's hard to shake. The members of the band have changed a couple of times over the years but the line up we plan on sticking with is: Mike Ruocco - Lead Vocals/Guitar, Mac Calvaresi - Drums/Vocals, Brian Magill - Bass/Vocals and Chris Shucosky - Guitar/Vocals. For those uninitiated, how would you describe the band's sound and what song should people check out to best get what Plunge are all about? Our sound is a really hard thing for me to describe. I feel like we incorporate aspects of bands like Bon ...

Pride Of Lions (2004)

Pride Of Lions: Fulfilling Their Destiny. Jim Peterik talks about the spirit behind the music and the making of the new Pride Of Lions album, not to mention what else he has in store for 2005. Ok, Jim - first of all, well done on creating another great slice of classic melodic rock. Thanks Andrew - coming from a man that has "heard it all" in classic rock that is a great compliment! Going right back to the time following the release of the debut - that album also gained some amazing reviews and personal feedback for yourself. Did you feel any pressure building in the time following that to start work on a follow-up that would have to top the work done on the debut? I happen to work well under pressure. When Frankie and I were asked to write the theme for Rocky 3, we had one week to write it, record it and mix it! Not to mention rewrite it a few times. If there seems to be more urgency and a fresher sound on this record it is because we didn't have time to over-think it and process it to death. In some cases I would write a ...

Perfect World (2003)

Perfect World: Fabrizio V.Zee Grossi and Kelly Hansen unite for a perfect union. Kelly Hansen - The Hurricane and former Unruly Child vocalist talks about what drew him into the idea of recording an album of cover tunes, not to mention what's in the future for Hurricane. Hi Kelly, It's been a good few years for you - albums with Unruly Child and Hurricane both in stores and producing the Ramos album. First up - how did you get involved in the Ramos project in the first place? I got a call from Michael Robinson who was doing some work for Frontiers. We had worked together on the Robert Fleishman Project. Do you enjoy the production side of things over performing? They are just two sides of the same coin, I like them both. In your opinion, can an artist do both and remain objective? Of course, but the artist has to be at least smart enough to know he has to pay attention to the danger of losing perspective. With Perfect World, you have teamed up with Fabrizio V.Zee Grossi - he comes with an excellent reputation - how did you enjoy working with him? We had ...

Praying Mantis (2003)

Praying Mantis: The Journey continues for one of the UK's longest running hard rock acts.. Chris Troy talks about the band's new singers, new songs and dealing with life in 2003. Hi Chris…This album was recorded after the departure of vocalist Tony O'Hara. How did that originally come about? What were the circumstances leading up to his departure? It is quite a long story but basically like all singers, they get too big for their boots and eventually start making excessive demands. We really did try to salvage the band but I think when he moved from London to Birmingham the death knell was already sounding. Sometimes geography like that does make things very difficult. On top of that there was talk from him for the requirement for big money and the band got sick and tired of it ...it just was not worth the hassle. You have used the band members and two guest vocalists for the album - how was the process behind selecting those sings undertaken? Mainly because there is some history there. John worked with Dennis when he was in Lionheart a number of years ago and he told Tino and me what a great voice ...

Phantom's Opera (2003)

Phantom's Opera: Act IV sees a new voice behind the mike. Jack Young talks tracks, writing and replacing the very well known voice of the band for new album Act IV. The new album seems to see the band doing everything they always have done, but with a new twist. What was the thought behind the album when you got started in making it? After Following Dreams it was felt that we needed to recapture our dark side on the heavy end without being too progressive and no more personal stuff and keeping the themes more open...and that we should once again focus on the elements that comprised our sound signature. What were the circumstances that lead to singer Colie Brice leaving the band? Colie's set skills in the music arena are broad-based. His solo career was beginning to blossom. He not only required room to sing, but to also expand his songwriting and production contributions. It was his time. Terry Brock is obviously a classic melodic rock singer - how did his name get brought into the PO equation and did you shape any of the music to fit him, or did he do the shaping?! We went ...

Harem Scarem - PART 1 - Pete Lesperance (2002)

Thanks Pete for hooking up with me for this interview. First up - when was the first time you considered bringing back the Harem Scarem name? After we finished our deal with Warner we were checking out our options and both fans and labels we were talking to seemed interested in another HS record so we tried some stuff in that vein and decided that that is what we would do. What kind of frustrations lead you to drop the name in the first place? There was a stigma attached to the name in Canada and we thought the music had gone far enough from HS to warrant the name change. In hindsight, were the Rubber albums good for you and Harry mentally? Absolutely ... I still feel that the first Rubber record is some of the best work we have done. And we were somewhat vindicated by having a top 40 hit in Canada with Sunshine. Were they successful for commercially, in comparison to HS? In Canada we had more luck with Rubber but it seemed to throw some of our Japanese and European fans for a loop. Back to the point...haha...so you decided to bring Harem back and ...

Pulse (2002)

Ok Vince, thanks for taking time out to answer some questions about the new British AOR band Pulse. For those that don't know the band yet, can you run down the line-up of the band. Simon Abbotts-vocals Lynch Radinsky-drums+vocals Andy Mills-bass+vocals Rob Wood-keyboards and myself, Vince As a prelude for those that might be interested in hearing/buying the album, how can you best describe and compare the band's sound? I would describe the bands sound as ballsy but very melodic AOR, it's hard for me to say who we sound like so will leave that up to you. How long have you been together as a band? Simon and myself have been writing songs together for over 10 years but the band was only put together last June. Now your name of course, might be more familiar than most, as you have been in Bob Catley's live band for a few years now. How has that experience been for you? Playing in Bob's band has been an incredible experience, lots of new faces, lots of new places. I can't wait till he tours again. Has playing with Bob helped craft your sound in any way? Yes definitely, I ...

Humanimal - Pontus Norgren (2001)

PONTUS NORGREN xx Pontus, you have been involved in just about every aspect of the rock scene in Sweden. What part do you enjoy most - producer, engineer, guitarist, live performer, song writer...? - I have to say everything! Guitar playing I have to say is still closest to my heart, but what can you say when you get offered to do sound for bands like Thin Lizzy, Y.J. Malmsteen etc. Also traveling around the world gets you to meet a lot of people in the same business. The last few years have seen you release several projects under several different names, including a solo release, how do you see Humanimal fitting into all of that? - I see Humanimal as a good opportunity to take my guitar playing/song writhing to a different level, and I think I can back it up with just saying, Listen to the album! I guess what I mean is will Humanimal be an ongoing concern - more records and maybe some live appearances? -There will for sure be a second Humanimal album! We are more than ready to play live, but it depends on the backup from our label if they think ...

Stream - Peter Scheithauer (1998)

An Interview with Steam founder and guitarist Peter Scheithauer. So how long was this project in development? Stream is my solo project. It exists for the last 10 years but for this CD it happens by the end of 1996. Who wrote the songs? I wrote the main riffs except Camouflage. And after Bob helped me to arrange and added some parts like lead breaks, end of songs. David did all the lyrics/melodies. Camouflage was two different riff that Eric had on a tape we made a song out of it and added different parts. The instrumental is totally different I wrote 100% of it, it's an old session that the label liked. What did you have in mind to achieve in the beginning? Right from the beginning Stream is my project and my goal is to play with people that I admire. Plus I wanted to find a way to have different influences on one CD kind of the 70's meets the 80's meets the 90's. All the musicians I played in Stream with I own their CD's saw them live when I was a teenager. I'm very fortunate to have the possiblity to play with those guys. How did the ...

Paul Gilbert (1998)

First off, all the guys in Mr. Big have found side projects or are making solo records - where does that leave the future of Mr. Big? Mr. Big is currently on hiatus. The future is unknown at this time. I will come back to Mr. Big, but first to your solo record - Congratulations on a fine album! In the lead up or approach to this album, what were you looking to do? In my approach to my first solo album, I wanted to introduce myself as a singer/songwriter and still keep interesting and heavy guitar throughout. How long were you writing for the record? The songs were written mostly a few months before I began recording, but there are some old favorites of mine too. How long did it take to record? The album was recorded in 3 months. I see you enlisted the help of Bruce Bouillet. Are you two buddies? Bruce Bouillet is a very good friend of mine! We worked very hard together while recording and still had lots of fun. So how do you like the outcome? I am very happy with both the recording experience and the finished product. I know of your ...
