Retailers & Indie Labels Pushing for Monday Global Release Day

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Retailers & Indie Labels Pushing for Monday Global Release Day

In August, it was reported that the music industry had its eye on a Friday global release day that would take effect July 2015. Now that proposition is getting some pushback from a cohort of retailers and indie record labels, who are endorsing a Monday over a Friday street date.

In an announcement made Tuesday (Nov. 25), organizations including the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), Amoeba Music, Newbury Comics, Rough Trade U.K. and U.S., and Redeye Distribution agree to the concept of a global release day -- they just want it on a different day.

This news follows opposition to a Friday date first broached in September, when Target spokeswoman Jill Hornbacher said her company believed Tuesday worked best for retail synchronization and logistical reasons, which were echoed by A2IM head Rich Bengloff. "It aligns with all the other entertainment properties in North America," she said. "Our guests have come to know that they can find new movies, new music and video games on that day."

"The evidence suggests that virtually all the benefits of a Global Release Date can be captured on a Monday without any additional costs," Kim Bayley, director general of the Entertainment Retailers Association, said in a statement. "It is a no-brainer. The potential to create a New Music Monday focusing all of the industry’s marketing efforts at the beginning of the week is very exciting."

The idea of a universal release date was initially floated to combat piracy: Australia currently has a Friday street date, which means digital piracy begins almost immediately once the new release is shared across the Web before fans in the U.K. (which has a Monday street date) or the U.S. (Tuesday) have a chance to purchase the music legally. Advocates for releasing albums in the beginning of the week point out that it would cost less than releasing them on Friday, as many labels already release albums, tracks, etc. on Monday. (Even though, as Australian Music Retailers Association executive director Ian Harvey told Billboard, the costs and logistics of moving to a Friday release date were "non-issues.")

Added Alison Wenham, chairman and CEO of the Association of Independent Music, "Supporting independent retailers is a core principal of independent record companies, and we work together very closely. If the retailers' view is that Monday is the best day for new releases -- why would we argue otherwise? They are after all the experts in retail."

The Department of Record Stores also endorses a Monday release date, as they initially argued that a Tuesday street date allows for errors in shipping and ordering that a Friday release date does not. Plus, a Monday/Tuesday release gives stores time to restock for the weekend in case an order gets lost in transit, a record is bigger than expected, or if a record happens to explode upon its release.

About BILLY IDOL:
From punk pioneer to global superstar, William Michael Albert Broad, aka BILLY IDOL, has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades.  His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trend.  Born in 1955 in Stanmore, North London, IDOL spent several formative years living on Long Island, NY as a child before returning to the UK and emerging as a central figure of the British punk movement.  As part of the infamous Bromley Contingent and a fan of the Sex Pistols, IDOL was inspired to front the pioneering British punk band Generation X from 1976 until the band's split in 1981. Determined to break through in America, IDOL hooked up with guitar genius Steve Stevens and a crucial musical partnership was forged. IDOL created some of rock's most enduring anthems including 'White Wedding,' 'Dancing With Myself,' 'Flesh For Fantasy,' 'Hot In the City,' 'Eyes Without A Face,' 'Rebel Yell,' and 'Cradle of Love,' among others.  BILLY IDOL is the original punk rocker who found a way to take that sneering punk attitude into the pop and rock mainstream, carving out songs that have lasted a lifetime.

Billboard: Album Sales Continue To Slide

Friday, August 29, 2014

The market for albums continues to recede, following a (now) long-standing trend that has been accelerated by streaming's success.
As streaming gathers momentum, the U.S. music industry keeps breaking sales milestones -- the wrong kind.

This week's 3.97-million album sales tally is the smallest weekly sum for album sales since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. It's also the first time weekly sales have fallen below four million in that time span.

Last week was fairly slow for the top releases. The top album, Wiz Khalifa's Blacc Hollywood, debuted with sales of 90,000 units, a figure below the first-week sales of many other top debuts of 2014. Three other albums debuted inside the top 10 but averaged only 31,000 units apiece. And the Frozen soundtrack is no longer moving in excess of 100,000 units per week.

To compare, a year ago this past week (ending Aug. 25, 2013), 4.88 million albums were sold. But sales have been losing steam all year. The weekly average number of album sales fell from 4.75 million units in the first quarter to 4.55 million units in the second quarter. In the first 8 weeks of the third quarter, the average has fallen further to 4.2 million.

This decline is actually in line with historical trends. In 2013, average weekly album sales experienced a similar fate, falling from 5.7 million units in the first quarter to 5.23 million units in the second quarter and then 4.86 million units in the third quarter. This year, overall U.S. album sales are down 14.6 percent, while digital album sales are down 11.7 percent and track sales are down 12.8 percent.
As more and more consumers transition from purchasing music to streaming tunes, it's natural to see album sales shrink. This year, there have only been five weeks where album sales were above 5 million.

Larger retailers and CDs, vestiges of an older record business, have been hit the hardest. Through August 24th, CD sales are down 19.2 percent year-over-year while sales at mass merchants and chains have fallen 23 percent and 25.6 percent, respectively.
Record label sales executives are not surprised by the latest downturn. "Sales have been going in the wrong direction all year," says one label sales head. "I guess its overdue, when you look at [the growth of streaming]." This year, label executives finally conceded something there were reluctant to acknowledge last year: Streaming is cannibalizing digital sales.

Last year, when Billboard covered the then-historic lows in album sales last August, weekly sales had dipped below 5 million units for five weeks in a row. Weekly sales fared even worse in the following weeks, falling under five million units in 10 of the next 13 weeks. There was even another five-week run of below-five-million weekly sales from early October to early November.
Related
The five-million-unit mark has been almost unreachable in 2014. So far this year, weekly album sales have fallen below that threshold in 29 of 34 weeks and in each of the last 18 weeks. No weekly sales tally has exceeded 4.5 million units since the middle of June.

"What can I say about this week's sales," says yet another distribution sales executive. "I remember when album sales fell under 10 million units and the industry reacted like it was a tragedy."

There is yet more bad news about the sales trend. Since album sales began to slide in 2002, the lowest-placed weekly sales floor by the end of the year tends to become the new ceiling for sales in the following year. Past history teaches us that, if weekly sales continue to fall below the three million mark, next year's norm will be in the three to four million range.

While some major label executives claim that revenue from streaming, which continues to grow, is offsetting declining digital sales revenue, not everyone agrees with that assessment.

"This year the bottom fell out of digital sales to a degree that we never anticipated, which is why many companies are not meeting this year's revenue projections," laments one indie distribution executive.

PANDORA MEDIA Topped 5 Billion Listener Hours 2nd QTR 2014.

Friday, July 25, 2014
Pandora Media topped 5 billion listener hours for the first time during the second quarter of 2014.

Pandora Media topped 5 billion listener hours for the first time during the second quarter of 2014, while beating its own revenue expectations but posting a wider loss than the same period last year.
The Oakland, Calif.-based internet radio service posted revenue of $218.9 million during the April-to-June period, its highest-ever figure and 43 percent more than the $153.1 million in revenue it reaped during the second quarter of 2013. But it withstood a loss of $11.7 million, or 6 cents per share -- a bigger shortfall than the 4 cents per share it lost a year ago. The mobile segment delivered $167.5 million, or 76 percent of total revenue.

The company and analysts had expected flat earnings growth or a profit of up to 3 cents during the quarter, and investors punished Pandora in after-hours trading. Shares were off $2.92 to $25.80, or 10.17 percent, at 6 p.m. ET as the company ended its conference call discussing the earnings.

The company continues to face competition from other online radio providers, such as fast-growing iHeartRadio, as well as burgeoning interest in music subscription services such as Spotify that allow users to choose individual songs or listen to online radio stations and playlists. But Pandora's brand has proven resilient, especially as other tech giants have edged into online radio and unveiled new products as well. Apple introduced iTunes Radio last year, while Google has delayed the launch of a service based on YouTube to complement its Google Play service.

Pandora beat its own revenue estimate of $213 million to $218 million for the quarter, and expects to outdo itself during the year's second half as well. The company raised its full-year revenue guidance upward by $15 million to a range of $895 million to $915 million.
Along with its financials, Pandora released statistics showing 5.04 billion listener hours during the second quarter, about 29 percent more than the 3.91 billion in the same period last year and 5 percent more than the 4.8 billion during 2014's first quarter.

Among its more than 250 million registered accounts, Pandora counted 76.4 million active users as of June, just off from a May peak of 77 million. The company also claims a 77.6 percent share of Internet radio and an 8.9 percent share of all U.S. radio-listening time in June, also just below an April peak of 9.28 percent. During the call, CEO Brian McAndrews called June "a traditional low point" in the annual listening cycle.

The company's content acquisition costs dipped to 50.9 percent of overall revenue,  markedly less than the 62.6 percent it paid during last year's second quarter and the 53.8 percent it paid during the full year of 2013. Both McAndrews and chief financial officer Mike Herring noted during the conference call that the company has paid out $1 billion in royalties during its lifespan thus far and topped $100 million for the second consecutive quarter.

One of Pandora's measures of financial performance is revenue per thousand listener hours. Ad sales generated $62.4 in so-called RPMs on traditional computers, while mobile and tablet RPMs reached $36. Combined advertising RPMs were $40.11 during the quarter, up 5.9 percent over the same period in 2013.

JUDAS PRIEST'S 'REDEEMER OF SOULS' DEBUTS IN BILLBOARD TOP TEN!

Judas Priest's 17th studio effort overall, 'Redeemer of Souls,' is set to debut in the Billboard 200 charts at #6, which is the highest US album chart debut of the legendary British band's career. Also, with a #5 chart debut in Canada, it is the highest chart-peaking album and first top five debut in the Canada Soundscan era.

And the album reviews have been some of the best of Priest's entire career as well, including Rolling Stone declaring "'Redeemer' is proof that Priest can still call themselves metal's defenders of the faith," while All Music Guide stated "'Redeemer of Souls' is also the loosest (attitude-wise), leanest (arrangement-wise), and most confident-sounding collection of new material the band has released in ages."

It was also recently announced that Priest (singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis) will be hitting the road this fall, along with special guests Steel Panther.

EDDIE MONEY Hopes To Release New Album 'Within The Next Six Months' (Billboard.com)

Artist:
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Categories:
News Feed
Titled "Shake That Thing," the album may also lead to a revival of his "Two Tickets To Paradise" stage show.

Eddie Money may lament that "I can't sing the Beatles' 'When I'm 64' anymore" now that he's turned 65, but he hardly considers that an age of retirement. In fact, he plans on shakin' some new music loose in the not-too-distant future.

Money tells Billboard that he's "written about five or six really good songs. It's very hard rock 'n' roll. I don't have the greatest rock 'n' roll voice in the world -- I'm not Paul Rodgers, but when you put me on the radio, you know it's Eddie Money." Among the new tunes are "I Ain't No Wishing Well," "Missing You Blues" and "I Ain't No Good," and he's also planning to include a live version of the title track from his album "Life For the Taking."

Money's already started recording the album, which he plans to title "Shake That Thing," in California with Gary Mallaber on drums and a variety of other players. "It should probably be out within the next six months," Money predicts. Meanwhile, he's helping some of his children with their musical aspirations: daughter Jesse, a onetime contestant on MTV's "Rock the Cradle," continues to be part of her father's band, while son Dez Money is leading his own group, The Faze, that occasionally opens shows for his father.

Eddie Money, meanwhile, is also planning to breathe new life into "Two Tickets to Paradise," the autobiographical stage musical that premiered in June 2009 on Long Island. Money, who co-wrote the book and penned six new songs for the production with director/playwright John Blenn, says he wants to find another home for it soon, perhaps on Broadway but possibly in Las Vegas or in the Money stronghold of Detroit. "It's a great play and it's wonderful tunes and I've got a bunch of Broadway-type songs in it," says Money, who appears at the end of the show to sing duets of some of his hits with the lead actor.

But, he adds, "I don't want to make it into a movie. 'Rock of Ages,' they turned it into a movie with Tom Cruise and everything and he looked ridiculous. And once they put it out as a movie the play didn't do as well in New York. It takes the mystique out of it. So I just want it to be on stage, where it was meant to be."

SONY CORP'S FORTUNES DECLINE, MUSIC HOLDS ITS OWN

Thursday, May 22, 2014

While Sony Corp's Fortunes Decline, Music Holds Its Own

By , New York

While Sony Corp. had a tough year, losing 128.4 billion yen ($1.25 billion) on sales of 7.77 trillion yen ($75.5 billion), the company's music and visual media operations held its own, posting an operation income of $488 million on sales of $4.89 billion. That compares with operating income of $361.8 million on sales of $4.3 billion.

While sales increased 13.8%, that was primarily due to the favorable impact of the depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar. On a constant currency bases, revenues were essentially flat.

Operating income increased even more dramatically, likewise due to favorable currency exchange rates, but also attributable to an improvement in equity in net income from affiliated companies like EMI Music Publishing, which Sony Corp. owns a 38% stake in.

Within the division, recorded music sales declined due to a contraction of the Japanese music market. But when the company added that music publishing and its visual media platform (visual media and platform includes various service offerings for music and visual products and the production and disribution of animation titles) revenues increased. Its recorded music operations of Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Japan accounted for $3.4 billion; Sony Music Publishing had revenues of $650 million; the visual media and platform segment had revenues of $753.8 million, plus there was about $109 million in intersegment revenue.

Sony Music's Best-selling titles in the current fiscal year included One Direction’s "Midnight Memories," Daft Punk’s "Random Access Memories," Beyoncé’s self-titled album and Miley Cyrus’ "Bangerz."

Going forward, the company projects that for the next fiscal year, its music divisions sales will be flat, while operating income will decrease due to increased restructuring charges. The company projects that sales will be flat nd operating income will fall $21 million to $467 million due to softening Japanese music market and an increase in restructuring charges.

Last year, that division experienced $5.6 million in restructuring charges and associated depreciation as opposed to $24.5 million in the prior year.

NEW YORK – Nielsen Entertainment, the music industry's leading data information provider (Nielsen SoundScan & Nielsen BDS), and Billboard announce the 2013 year-end report for the 12-month period of December 31, 2012 through December 29, 2013.  Nielsen SoundScan measures U.S. point-of-sale of recorded music product.  Nielsen BDS tracks U.S. radio airplay and music streams.  Both systems power many of the Billboard charts.

For 2013, more albums exceeded a million unit sales than in 2012 (13 in 2013 vs. 10 in 2012).  Album sales including Track Equivalent Albums (Albums + TEA) also had more million-sellers in 2013 over 2012 (24 in 2013 vs. 22 in 2012).

"Despite shifts in how music is consumed, we see continued growth in overall music consumption says David Bakula, SVP Industry Insights, Nielsen Entertainment.  “With more than 118 billion streams in 2013 reported by our data providers, which is the approximate revenue equivalent of 59 million albums purchased, the industry remains vibrant as consumption continues to change and expand.  2013 was also great year for creative album release events.”

2013 YEAR-END HIGHLIGHTS

·         Streaming continues to be a very bright spot for the music industry, with more than 32% growth over last year, including a remarkable +103% increase in On-Demand Audio streaming.

·         Justin Timberlake had the biggest album-debut week this year, when the 20/20 Experience opened with 968,000 units in its first week.  20/20 Experience is the best-selling album of the year and, coupled with the subsequent fall release of the 20/20 Experience Complete, the two titles combined to sell over 3.2 Million units in 2013.

·         Adele’s 21 album becomes the first album ever to surpass 3 Million in Digital sales, and the top-selling digital album of all time.

Ø  Mumford and Sons Sigh No More and Babel are the 2nd and 3rd biggest-selling digital albums respectively.  Combined sales for these two albums are 3,010,000, exceeding 21 by only 1,000 units.

·         Robin Thicke/Blurred Lines and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis/Thrift Shop eclipsed 6 Million digital song sales each in 2013, the second consecutive year that the top two songs each sold over six million units.

Ø  In 2012, Gotye featuring Kimbra/Somebody That I Used to Know and Carly Rae Jepsen/Call Me Maybe each surpassed six million song sales, marking the first time that any digital song had sold more than six million units in a calendar year.

·         Beyoncé had the second-biggest digital album debut of all time when her surprise release Beyoncé was released in December and sold 617,000 digital albums in its first week.  After only three weeks of release, Beyoncé is already the 9th best-selling digital album of all time.

Ø  Lady Gaga/Born This Way moved 662,000 album units in its debut week.

·         Justin Timberlake became the first-artist-not-named-Adele to sell more than 1 Million Digital albums in a calendar year as his 20/20 Experience sold 1,026,000 units.

Ø  Combined with the 20/20 Experience Complete, the two albums sold 1,345,000 Digital Albums.

·         Eminem burst back onto the scene with his Marshall Mathers LP2, which had the second biggest album debut week of the year with 792,000 units.  The album totaled over 1.7 Million units for the year and was just one of four Eminem albums to make the Top 200 best-selling albums for the year.

Ø  Recovery sold 169,000 albums in 2013, landing at #164 for the year; Eminem Show sold 165,000 (#175), and Curtain Call sold 154,000 (#189).

·         One Direction and Blake Shelton each had three albums in the 2013 Top 200 best-selling albums chart.

Ø  One Direction’s Midnight Memories sold 1,096,000 (#12) in 2013; Take Me Home sold 555,000 (#36); and Up All Night sold 312,000 (#87).

Ø  Blake Shelton’s Based On A True Story sold 1,109,000 albums in 2013; Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton sold 182,000 (#144); and Red River Blue sold 165,000.

·         Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist not only sold more than 1 Million copies, but the songs from the album also sold nearly 16 Million units combined, or 1.6 Million Track Equivalent Albums (TEA), placing the project as the #3 album with TEA seller for the year.

·         Country music continues to be a strong seller across all formats, with Country’s share of total album sales reaching 13.8% this year (down slightly from last year’s record high of 14.1%).  Country’s share of digital song sales has reached 12.6% of all songs sold and 9.6% of all digital albums sold, each of which are high water marks for the genre.

Ø  Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” is the best-selling Country Digital Song of all time, with sales of 6.33 million.  Lady Antebellum/Need You Now (6.27million); Taylor Swift/Love Story (5.66 million); Band Perry/If I Died Young (4.74 million); and Taylor Swift/You Belong (4.41 million) round out the rest of the Top 5.
