Foreigner 40: Lou Gramm, Mick Jones Reveal Birth Of Unique Partnership

Dallas, TX - March 8, 2017.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website In The Studio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands  examines the birth of late ‘70s rock juggernaut Foreigner with its two creative principles Lou Gramm and Mick Jones.

Foreigner was the brainchild of Englishman and former Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones, a veteran musician in 1977 looking to re-energize his career with a fresh start in America. Jones teamed with fellow Brit Ian McDonald and they auditioned thirty-five singers before discovering Lou Gramm, an unheralded singer then in a band called Black Sheep from Rochester in upstate New York.  After a series of auditions with Gramm, this unlikely pair found common ground in the studio, putting together a remarkable debut album Foreigner of ready-made radio hits including “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold As Ice” and “Long Long Way From Home”.

Foreigner’s first release forty years ago would become the fastest selling album in Atlantic Records history. The skyrocketing success would later manifest as tension in the band and ultimately lead to a lineup change on their fourth effort, but it is the unique relationship between Lou Gramm and Mick Jones which would define Foreigner for a decade.

Speaking to Gramm and Jones, In The Studio producer and host Redbeard gets a clearer picture of the relationship behind Foreigner’s hit machine.

“I felt there was an interesting chemistry...based on Mick’s rock and roll experience and Ian’s eclectic left field background, that there would be some really really interesting songs... That was really appealing to me.”  - Lou Gramm

“We (Mick and Lou) weren’t necessarily people who would hang out together. We sometimes found it, and still do find it, awkward to be together sometimes... I’ve gotten to know Lou over these years and he’s gotten to know me. We have different tastes. We have different things we like to do in our spare time. We occasionally get together socially, but it’s quite rare.”   - Mick Jones

FOREIGNER Announces 40th Anniversary Tour Details: Billboard Exclusive

Tour News
Foreigner plans to make this year's 40th anniversary summer tour "a family affair" according to group founder Mick Jones -- including the other acts on the bill and the return of some prodigal sons.
The group kicks things off June 11 in Syracuse with longtime pals Cheap Trick and former drummer Jason Bonham and his band. And Mick Jones tells Billboard that original Foreigner members Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald and Al Greenwood will be appearing on select dates. "They're not on the whole tour, but there will be some appearances," Jones says. "It's the right time to do this. I'm looking forward to that and we'll see how it goes, and I'm sure it'll go down well."
The reunions will certainly be a highlight during a busy anniversary year for Foreigner. The group will be touring extensively; In addition to the summer dates -- 37 dates running through Sept. 9 in Auburn, Wash. (tickets go on sale Jan. 13 via www.LiveNation.com) -- the group is also playing U.S. dates starting Jan. 30, with a European tour beginning May 20 in Switzerland. A two-disc, 40-track anniversary compilation with some brand new material is planned, while Jones will be publishing his memoir, A Foreigner's Tale, due out this spring.
"I could never have dreamed this would happen or that we would still have some kind of relevance 40 years later. It's unbelievable, really," says Jones, who formed Foreigner during 1976 in New York, releasing its first album a year later. "I think it's fitting at this point that we do this. I'm very proud of everything we've done and what we've achieved, and of how the new band [lineup] has fought back for me and for the heritage of Foreigner. It's kind of the way I always dreamed that Foreigner would appears, as a very exciting live band and everything that goes along with it. It's really been very inspiring for me."
The compilation album, meanwhile, will precede the tour, adding a new recording of "The Flame Still Burns," a song Jones wrote for the 1998 film Still Crazy (the group has already released a video for the song), along with "a few others in the offing, another [new] song that we're working on right now, and then all the greatest hits and more."

He tells funny, revealing and intriguing stories, beginning with his remarkable early musical career with Nero and the Gladiators in London, and in France with Sylvie Vartan and Johnny Hallyday in the 1960s (including a tour with the Beatles). From there, he describes working with some great musicians (among them George Harrison and Jimmy Page) before joining Leslie West and then Spooky Tooth in New York ' where Foreigner first took shape. Rare, early, personal, candid, studio and live photographs illuminate this extraordinary story, along with FOREIGNER artwork, memorabilia and Jones' personal record and guitar collection.

Coinciding with the release of A Foreigner's Tale, FOREIGNER--Mick Jones (lead guitar), Kelly Hansen (lead vocals), Jeff Pilson (bass, vocals), Tom Gimbel (rhythm guitar, sax, vocals), Michael Bluestein (keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar) and Chris Frazier (drums)'will head out on a world tour throughout 2017 in celebration of their 40 years as a recording, touring band. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Responsible for some of rock and roll's most enduring anthems including 'Juke Box Hero,' 'Cold as Ice,' 'Feels Like The First Time,' 'Urgent,' 'Head Games,' 'Say You Will,' 'Dirty White Boy,' 'Long, Long Way From Home,' and the worldwide #1 hit, 'I Want To Know What Love Is,' FOREIGNER continues to rock the charts more than thirty years into the game. Recent albums like Juke Box Heroes, a new compilation of digitally recorded Foreigner hits, and The Best of Foreigner 4 & More, recorded live from The Borgata, Atlantic City, both entered the Billboard Top 200 chart.  Foreigner also featured strongly in every category in Billboard's recently released 'Greatest of All Time' listing.  Catalog sales often eclipse those of Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Def Leppard, Van Halen and most of their Classic Rock peers (Source: Nielsen SoundScan 2/11/16 - 2/3/16).

Lou Gramm, Mick Jones Recall 1981 Album of the Year, Foreigner 4

Artist:
Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Podcasts & Radio

Dallas, TX - July 7, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands  visits with Lou Gramm and Mick Jones for the 35th anniversary of Foreigner’s most significant album, Foreigner 4.  The Album of the Year in 1981, it was # 1 seller on the American charts for ten weeks, producing the hits “Waiting For A Girl Like You”, “Urgent”, the rocker “Night Life” , and the classic “Jukebox Hero”.

In the late1970s the band Foreigner seemed destined to become a classic case of too much, too soon. The band’s first, 1977’s Foreigner and then Double Vision in 1978, were multi-platinum hits of unprecedented proportions and Foreigner entered the Rock and Roll arena as a full blown star. It was heady stuff, to be sure, but that kind of rapid success is often a recipe for quick decline as well.

For Foreigner the critical point came after their third album Head Games which was released in 1979. Head Games didn’t do as well as the first two albums, and the six Foreigner band members started to blame each other, resulting in departure of two of Foreigner’s original members. There were serious questions as to whether the remaining four should continue as the band Foreigner. In the end Mick Jones, Lou Gramm, Rick Wills and Dennis Elliott decided to forge ahead, making their most successful album ever. Mick Jones, Foreigner’s founder and lead guitarist, and former singer, songwriter Lou Gramm reflect with InTheStudio host Redbeard, on the crisis and eventual vindication that marked Foreigner 4

“We started to rehearse for the 4 album. I was so frustrated because I felt that the direction of the band was getting so diverse, with everybody wanting to express themselves... I wasn’t hogging the writing. I was ready to be challenged by anybody else’s ideas, and as far as I was concerned the objective was to achieve a great album...and I was pretty strong minded about it.”  -  Mick Jones

“It was only after a week in the studio that the kind of undercurrent and dissatisfaction came to a head and the changes were made, or I think the band would have fallen apart right in the studio.” - Lou Gramm

Legendary guitarist MICK JONES of FOREIGNER joins Mitch on episode 208 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

MICK JONES new interview - HEAD GAMES reunion coming

LINK TO EPISODE: http://www.spreaker.com/user/talkingmetal/1on1-mitch-lafon-208-mick-jones-foreigne

In the episode's only interview, FOREIGNER's MICK JONES discusses his recent health issues (heart), as well as the band's upcoming tour dates, their latest album (the acoustic) IN CONCERT - UNPLUGGED, producing VAN HALEN's 5150 album, juvenile diabetes, working again with LOU GRAMM, plans for a 40th anniversary (reunion) tour (reuniting the HEAD GAMES lineup), recording new music, singer KELLY HANSEN and much more.

Quotes from the MICK JONES interview:

His heart issues (time at 5.02): "It really gave me a chance to stop and think about things a bit. First of all, think about how the hell I was going to deal with my life after that."

Kelly Hansen (Time 8.39): "He was an incredible addition to the band. It was absolutely vital that we had somebody who could step into 'those shoes'. He's just gone from better to better to better. Can't describe it really. He's just so dedicated."

Van Halen's 5150 (time 12.55) : "I guess I liked to live dangerously.  I had known Sammy (Hagar) quite well over the years and that was the connection. It was a formidable atmosphere when I got there and I was nervous - I really was."

40th year anniversary and working with LOU GRAMM again (25.02): "It's quite possible. We've actually been talking about it. We're all working on trying to make it happen. It's kind of exciting. Hopefully it'll be feasible and possible to pull it off."

REUNITING the HEAD GAMES line up (time 25.43): "Lou and I have communicated and we've kept up a sort of loose communication as I have actually also with Ian McDonald, Al Greenwood, Dennis Elliott and Rick Wills. We're at the early stages, but we're trying to put something together to commemorate (it's scary when I say it) 40 years."

FOREIGNER's JEFF PILSON joins Mitch on episode 197 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

In the episode's only interview, bassist Jeff Pilson discusses Foreigner's latest release In Concert: Unplugged (available only on Amazon for the benefit of Juvenile Diabetes), working on the Last In Line album (featuring Jimmy Bain, Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice), working on the Mortal Kombat movie, his friendship with Steven Adler and his potential return to Guns N' Roses and the upcoming classic era DOKKEN reunion.

Quotes from the Jeff Pilson interview:

New album: "It may be acoustic, but it still rocks."

Dokken Reunion: "We've all come to a place where we are very appreciative of the legacy Dokken has. When we finally do something, we are going to try and do it right, but we are going to try and do something. Hopefully, I'll have something to report sometime soon."

Steven Adler & Guns N' Roses: "I'm a huge GUNS N' ROSES fan. I happen to think Matt Sorum is an amazing drummer, but chemistry is something you cannot argue with."

"There is something about the chemistry of Steven with those guys that made a sound that I think is the sound that we all know as that classic amazing Guns N' Roses sound. As great as the band could be in later days, I just never think it had that same desperate energy again. So, do I think he should get the call? Of course, I do. I honestly believe that those guys know that. They feel that deep down."

"I think he's ready and I hope to God he gets the phone call because if he does the world is going to get lit on fire again."

Last In Line: "I'm so insanely proud of that rock. It really feels like a little piece of history and I couldn't be more hounored (than) to be a part of it."

Will you tour with Last in Line: "I would step in in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, Foreigner already has dates."

Foreigner Set to Perform & Record First Live Acoustic Album 'The Hits Unplugged and Live' at Charity Event on 8/24

July 29, 2015 – Foreigner--Mick Jones (lead guitar), Kelly Hansen (lead vocals), Jeff Pilson (bass, vocals), Michael Bluestein (keyboards), Tom Gimbel (rhythm guitar, sax, vocals), Bruce Watson (guitar) and Chris Frazier (drums) -- is universally hailed as one of the world’s most popular rock acts with a formidable arsenal of hit songs that continue to propel sold-out tours and album chart action. Now they will perform and record their forthcoming album, “The Hits Unplugged and Live,” at a private event benefitting JDRF (formally known as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) on August 24th at The Ford Motor Company Conference and Event Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Limited tickets to this event are available by contacting ford@jdrf.org or 313-248-1655. Foreigner is donating their performance that evening, and their royalties from the record to JDRF, a charity close to the band’s heart. This new collection of never-before heard live acoustic recordings will be available on Sony in early 2016.

The evening’s one-hour set will feature some of rock’s best-known hits including “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” and Foreigner’s iconic ballad, “I Want To Know What Love Is.” The show will be opened by an acapella performance by beloved Detroit student choir, Mosaic, who will also join Foreigner on stage for “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Guests will enjoy a strolling dinner that will feature select menu items curated by Foreigner frontman and celebrated foodie Kelly Hansen prior to the performance. Also taking place that night will be a charity event featuring significant Foreigner memorabilia.
JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until they achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, policy influence and a working plan to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF has invested nearly $2B in research over the past 45 years and is sponsoring scientific research in 17 countries worldwide.

“We are so pleased to be collaborating with JDRF for such a meaningful program,” says Foreigner founder/lead guitarist, Mick Jones, Songwriters Hall Of Fame member who either wrote or co-wrote every Foreigner song. “Type 1 diabetes is a cause close to our heart, as our longtime tour manager’s daughter was diagnosed with T1D in 2003 when she was 4 years old. There is tremendous anticipation around our first ever live acoustic album, and we’re glad we could donate our performance fees and royalties to benefit such an important cause.”

“We are thrilled to have Ford Motor Company as a partner who brings opportunities like the iconic band Foreigner to help raise awareness for type 1 diabetes,” said Margo K. Lucero, JDRF’s senior vice president, corporate and international development. “JDRF's mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications, and we are so grateful to Ford and Foreigner for the support in helping us move closer to our goal to create a world without T1D.”

This is just one of the Mick Jones's philanthropic efforts, which also include a longtime partnership with The GRAMMY Foundation’s effort to support music in schools.  Foreigner invites a local high school to join them on stage at each concert they play, providing these choir’s the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform #1 hit “I Want To Know What Love Is” live with the band. Foreigner makes a direct donation to each school’s high school music program, as well as donating a portion of the evening’s CD sales to the GRAMMY Foundation. Over the years, Foreigner has raised well into the six-figures through this program, inviting more than 220 high school choirs to join the band on stage, allowing more than 6,000 students, teachers and parents to enjoy this life changing experience.

With ten multi-platinum albums and sixteen Top 30 hits, Foreigner has defied all odds of a heritage band with continued Billboard chart action and album sales, now exceeding 75 million. Foreigner has experienced a true renaissance in recent years, thanks in part to their legendary songs being featured in films like “Anchorman 2,” “Magic Mike” and “Orange Is The New Black,” with The New York Post’s “Page Six” recently noting “Foreigner is enjoying an unexpected renaissance with the millennial set.”

LOU GRAMM, THE VOICE OF FOREIGNER, TO EMBARK ON
EXTENSIVE NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER/FALL TOUR IN 2015

LEGENDARY LEAD SINGER OF ONE OF ROCK'S GREATEST BANDS
TO PERFORM AN EVENING FULL OF HITS WITH THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
AT DELTA CLASSIC CHASTAIN PARK AMPHITHEATER IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA ON FRIDAY, JUNE 5

If you listen to classic rock radio on a daily basis, you'd be hard-pressed to go a full day without hearing the distinctive and powerful vocals of Lou Gramm blasting through your speakers.
As the voice of Foreigner, one of rock's most popular and successful bands, Lou can be heard on every single one of the band's classic hits, which includes sixteen Top 30 songs and nine Top 10's over the years. For those into chart success, that's one less than the Eagles and the same as Fleetwood Mac.

Here are the Top 10's: "I Want To Know What Love Is," "Waiting For A Girl Like You," "Double Vision," "Hot Blooded," "Urgent," "Feels Like The First Time," "I Don't Want To Live Without You," "Say You Will" and "Cold As Ice."
You know them well.

And let's not forget "Head Games," the rock anthem, "Juke Box Hero" and other rockers such as "Dirty White Boy," "That Was Yesterday," "Blue Morning, Blue Day," "Long Long Way From Home" and "Break It Up" that cracked the Top 30.
By 1980, Foreigner's first eight singles (from their first three albums, Foreigner, Double Vision and Head Games) entered the Billboard Top 20 charts, making them the first band to achieve that feat since the Beatles.

On Friday, June 5, fans are in for a real rock and roll treat as Lou will performing a vast selection of those Foreigner hits, along with such solo hits as "Midnight Blue" and "Just Between You and Me," with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (Guest Conductor: Brent Havens) and his band at the Delta Classic Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta, Georgia.
One hit after another.

In 1978, shortly after the release of "Hot Blooded," Circus magazine remarked that Lou had a voice that Robert Plant might envy.
Of course, the rest was rock and roll history as when all might have been said but not yet done, Foreigner would join Led Zeppelin on the Atlantic Records label as one of the most successful artists ever on the imprint.
In May of 2013, Lou, with the help of writer Scott Pitoniak, released a must-read autobiography titled, Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades in Rock 'n' Roll (Triumph Books).

A month later, he would be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Lou and his band -- currently comprised of brother Ben Grammatico on drums, Michael Staertow on guitar, AD Zimmer on bass and Andy Knoll on keyboards -- have been on the road since the beginning of the year and have already performed a few dozen shows to date.
After the Chastain Park Amphitheater performance in early June, Lou will continue to tour throughout the year (see current itinerary below).
Come out and hear the voice behind the songs that have propelled Foreigner's worldwide album sales to exceed 75 million units, making them one of the world's best-selling artists of all-time.

They are legendary. No doubt…and I’m a huge fan of their music. HUGE! Especially the releases Agent Provocateur, Inside Information (very underrated), Unusual Heat (with Johnny Edwards), the monster AOR classic Mr. Moonlight (from 1994), plus of course the band’s most recent album with Kelly Hansen fronting the band, 2009’s Can't Slow Down.
So with my fan credentials established, I feel I am qualified to say “Foreigner…WTF guys?’

Believe it or not, the band has recorded just 9 studio albums in 37 years. Ok, I can live with that as they’ve all been notable releases.
But add to that, as of right now there are 5 live releases, at least 7 DVDs and no less than 16 compilations. Yes…16.

So do we need another live/compilation? Not really. But if you really insist upon it, The Best Of Foreigner 4 And More is ok.
Issues aside, taking a look at this album leaves you with the reaffirmation that Kelly Hansen is an absolute monster vocalist and this band is a really tight outfit.

Of course the songs are already legendary, but the whole spirit of this release is just off kilter for me. The songs are recorded over 2 nights in October, where 15 tracks were performed in a different order to what has been put together here.  Double Vision, Head Games and the legendary Dirty White Boy are omitted.
There are 7 Foreigner 4 tracks, which weren’t played in chronological order anyway, but are again re-arranged here still not in the original album’s sequence.
It may sound picky, but if you are going to do a live release based on paying tribute to one album, then play the full album in order like so many other artists have done.
Otherwise it’s just another live album – which is exactly what this is.

Awfully good of course…well recorded, perfectly performed and fill with classic songs, but based on the prior number of live and compilation releases, I imagine the fan base is beginning to feel as if it is being fleeced.

This is a great live recording, but the re-arranged order and the fade in/outs between tracks is a distraction and to be honest, the whole concept is only half-executed, so this will remain a really die-hard only purchase. I’d buy any studio album from Foreigner without any hesitation, but as a consumer, I’d pass on this, that is unless you don't have any other of the band's recent live albums. If that's the case, start here.

'The Best of 4 And More' will be released in Europe on December 5th with release in the UK on the 8th.

Released in 1981, Foreigner '4' spent more weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts than any artist in the history of Atlantic Records, including AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, and went on to sell more than 9 million albums worldwide. Hits included 'Juke Box Hero,' 'Urgent' and 'Waiting for a Girl Like You' ' all of which are present on 'The Best of Foreigner 4 & More.'  'It's great to be in a group with people who really get it, and understand how fortunate we are to be playing and performing such great material,' enthused vocalist Kelly Hansen, while band founder Mick Jones added, 'Our music has touched a lot of people worldwide ' unwittingly, we've weaved our music into the fabric of people's lives.'

"Night Life" is the live album opening track: a timeless rock song delivered with passion and urgency by the band and recorded live at the Borgata Hotel's Music Box theatre in Atlantic City in October 2014.

It is still possible to preorder the album via PledgeMusic, which offers vinyl, limited edition posters and remake T-shirts from their 1981-1982 tour packages. In related news, the Vinyl version of 'The Best of 4 And More' album will be released in partnership with Soulfood Music on January 23rd 2015.
