Coming off the 7x platinum selling Pyromania album, Def Leppard were emerging on top of the Rock heap in ’83-’84. Attempting to follow-up the massive seller quickly, Def Leppard were hard at work recording their next album by the winter of 1984 when a tragic freak car accident would leave drummer Rick Allen without his left arm. It would be another two and a half years of intense work in the studio, including a switch back to producer Mutt Lang, before Hysteria would finally be released to a long awaiting fanbase. Joe Elliott tells IN THE STUDIO host Redbeard about a comical encounter with legendary Stones singer Mick Jagger that drove home the ridiculousness of there 4 1/2 year gap between albums.

“We had Mick Jagger come in and do two solo albums in the same complex when we were doing the first one (Hysteria). (Elliott imitating Mick says) “Bloody Hell, you guys are still here? Weren’t you here doing that album when I was doing She’s The Boss?” “Yeah” (replies Elliott) (Jagger imitation) “Well, I’ve done that one, I’ve toured. I’ve had two kids, done a Stones album and toured and now I’m back doing my next solo album and your still here.” (laughter) - Joe Elliott

Dallas, TX - March 8, 2017. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website In The Studio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands examines the birth of late ‘70s rock juggernaut Foreigner with its two creative principles Lou Gramm and Mick Jones.

Foreigner was the brainchild of Englishman and former Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones, a veteran musician in 1977 looking to re-energize his career with a fresh start in America. Jones teamed with fellow Brit Ian McDonald and they auditioned thirty-five singers before discovering Lou Gramm, an unheralded singer then in a band called Black Sheep from Rochester in upstate New York. After a series of auditions with Gramm, this unlikely pair found common ground in the studio, putting together a remarkable debut album Foreigner of ready-made radio hits including “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold As Ice” and “Long Long Way From Home”.

Foreigner’s first release forty years ago would become the fastest selling album in Atlantic Records history. The skyrocketing success would later manifest as tension in the band and ultimately lead to a lineup change on their fourth effort, but it is the unique relationship between Lou Gramm and Mick Jones which would define Foreigner for a decade.

Speaking to Gramm and Jones, In The Studio producer and host Redbeard gets a clearer picture of the relationship behind Foreigner’s hit machine.

“I felt there was an interesting chemistry...based on Mick’s rock and roll experience and Ian’s eclectic left field background, that there would be some really really interesting songs... That was really appealing to me.” - Lou Gramm

“We (Mick and Lou) weren’t necessarily people who would hang out together. We sometimes found it, and still do find it, awkward to be together sometimes... I’ve gotten to know Lou over these years and he’s gotten to know me. We have different tastes. We have different things we like to do in our spare time. Dallas, TX - February 11, 2015. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands catches up with Detroits favored son and RocknRoll Hall of Famer Bob Seger on the 35th anniversary of his classic album Against The Wind.

After over a decade of sweatin it out on the road, as documented on the live album Live Bullet, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band finally had their breakout with 1976s Night Moves followed by Stranger In Town in 1978, capping off a phenomenal end to the decade.

The sheer height to which Bob Segers star had risen was put on full display when Against the Wind unseated Pink Floyds epic The Wall album for the # 1 spot on the Billboard chart upon release in February 1980, producing the hits Fire Lake, Youll Accompny Me, and title track Against the Wind.

Superstardom, however, was challenging for Seger. Bob admits to InTheStudio host Redbeard how he was able to find his way after selling over 17 million albums in four short years.

I think (my) reaction to stardom was very uncomfortable from 76 thru 79, because I had NO reaction (from record execs) for the twelve years prior to that. I was very suspicious throughout that period... I was probably not the best person to be around unless you were really in my inner circle... I was quite closed off. I think it wasnt until 1980 that I really opened up. And thats why I have such fond memories of Against the Wind. - Bob Seger

By the late Seventies, Pink Floyd had all the commercial success a band could imagine, but not without battle wounds. The relationships between composer/ bassist Roger Waters and the other band members, as well as between Waters and the audience, had been strained and distorted by the time of The Wall. The only thing left was the music.

In a two-part, two week special InTheStudio radio program, host Redbeard speaks with The Wall architect Roger Waters, singer/guitarist David Gilmour, and percussionist Nick Mason about building one of RocknRolls crowning recording, live production, and cinematic achievements.

Based on a music superstars plunge into the dark side of success which eventually results in absolute isolation, both emotionally and physically, from the audience he or she purports to attract, Roger Waters sadly recounts the autobiographical nature of The Wall and the defining moment he remembers it coming to life.


During a show in Montreal I finally got so angry that I spat at this child, he was 14 or 15 I suppose. When I got off stage afterwards I thought, What have I been reduced to? And what has happened to the relationship between the band and the audience? So, The Wall was something that I had experienced very powerfully through most of that (Animals) tour, but specifically on that day. - Roger Waters

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Roger Hodgson describes to InTheStudio program host Redbeard the creative mindset of the band during this period.

(Crime of the Century) was a magical period for Supertramp... the whole process of Crime was kinda us finding our feet as writers and as people. During that, we worked pretty closely together on School and Bloody Well Right in particular. From Crisis? onward we definitely wrote separately. It seemed that who we were, as people, became more defined.

Gary Wright Innovates For The Dream Weaver, InTheStudio.Net Explores Backstory Of Classic Album

Robert Moog, the inventor of the electronic musical synthesizer, opened up a new frontier for popular music. Many artists have used the synth in modern recording, but in 1975 there was only one artist who took the power of the synthesizer to a whole new level.

Gary Wright was a young American in London who played keyboards for an otherwise British band Spooky Tooth (which included a pre-Foreigner Mick Jones).
Following the split of Spooky Tooth, Gary returned home to New Jersey and armed with a handful of songs, set off to make a solo album exclusively on electronic keyboard, organ and synthesizer for his third solo album, The Dream Weaver .

Wright's bold move paid off with spectacular results from songs 'Love Is Alive', 'Made to Love You', 'Blind Feeling', 'Much Higher', 'Power of Love' (the only song to include electric guitar, courtesy of Ronnie Montrose) and the million-selling hit 'Dream Weaver'.

Gary shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard, the decisions he made in order to make The Dream Weaver.

'The whole sonic intent of the album was to have a lot of spaciousness in it, not a lot of instruments playing things. And everything that played something, to really make it count.'

Peter Wolf Throws House Party InTheStudio For Two J. Geils Band Classics: Bloodshot, Nightmares...

Formed in 1967, the J Geils Band made a name for themselves as an incredible jump blues band. Music writers loved the Boston-based band for several reasons, not least of which was the unabashed authenticity that the all-white sextet brought to indigenous American black blues and R&B songs without the homogenization which usually diluted similar British attempts. And then there was the J. Geils Band's live show, which quickly became legendary.

Their first live album, Full House got significant national FM airplay which set up their next studio album in 1973, Bloodshot, exhibiting improved fuller sound courtesy of James Gang (later Eagles) producer Bill Szymczyk, and delivering their first Top 10 album and Top 40 single, 'Give It To Me'.

Forty years ago next month, J.Geils Band released Nightmares ... and other tales from the vinyl jungle building off their rise in popularity and delivering the rock radio fave 'Detroit Breakdown' and their first big hit 'Must of Got Lost'.

Peter Wolf, in conversation with InTheStudio host Redbeard, remembers the key to the appeal of the J. Geils Band.

'To really understand Geils records, you had to have seen the show... Our shows were like house parties. You come and get crazy, were going to get TWICE as crazy.'

Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts Share Stories Of Famed Allman Brothers Band 1971 Fillmore East Performances

Dallas, TX July 29, 2014- North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands gets a front row seat to one of Rock's legendary concert stands, The Allman Brothers Band 1971 live at the Fillmore East shows.

By 1971 the Allman Brothers Band were on a roll with their second album, Idlewild South, breaching the Top 40 sales plateau for the first time, and bandleader Duane Allman had by then recorded the now legendary Layla album with Eric Clapton as Derek and the Dominos, resulting in Duane's quick ascension to a premiere slide guitar player.

In March of that year the Allmans would perform four shows over two nights at New York's Fillmore East, as well as the venue's closing night in late June. All of these shows were recorded and select tracks were released as the band's third album in July 1971, becoming the Allman Brothers Band's first Top 10 album.

Singer, songwriter and organist Gregg Allman and former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts sat down with InTheStudio program host Redbeard to recall the magic of those original band shows on the release of The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings. Gregg Allman shares with host Redbeard the mindset that permeated the band's live performances and created some of the most legendary extended musical jams ever recorded.

'There were no boundaries back then in the early '70s. There was no, 'We better shut this tune off at a certain time'. It was never even thought of.'

When the Eagles flew the coop in 1981, the members went their own ways for thirteen long years. Don Henley released his first solo album I Can't Stand Still in 1982 with the hit 'Dirty Laundry', and then in 1984 he released Building the Perfect Beast which would go on to sell more than 4 million copies while garnering a Grammy Award.

Don Henley was not quick to repeat that success, waiting a full five years before releasing, The End of the Innocence in the Summer of 1989, an album written in search of heroes and coming to grips with imperfect relationships. The album would score three Top 40 hits, 'The Last Worthless Evening', 'The Heart of the Matter' and the title track 'The End of the Innocence', selling over six million domestically while winning another Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

Don Henley shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard the difference between being in a group and being a solo artist.

'In a group like the Eagles you have to bow to the group as a whole...Now I'm totally responsible for everything that's on that record. In a way that's frightening, but on the other hand it's very freeing. I can do whatever I want and I don't mind taking the rap for it. People will know what my personality is by the songs that I write.'

Ric Ocasek, Greg Hawkes Lift The Hood Up On The Cars Candy-O For 35th Anniversary

Dallas, TX - July 3, 2014. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 35th anniversary of The Cars sophomore smash Candy-O.

The Cars first album accelarated slowly from its Spring 1978 release. The Boston based band was quickly tagged as a New Wave group, a kinda catch-all description of modern rock music that owed little to the Blues, Elvis, the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin. The Cars instead sited influences like the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, plus Iggy Pop as prototypes for The Cars angular alternative sound. But unlike the Velvets or Iggy, The Cars were mainstream.

By the July 4th 1979 holiday, a scant fourteen months after The Cars' debut album all eyes and ears were trained upon the quintet's next model, Candy-O. "Let's Go", "Since I Held You", "It's All I Can Do", "Dangerous Type" "Got a Lot on My Head" and the title track "Candy-O" would send sparks to the cylinders, resulting in two Top 40 hits and four million albums sold.

Cars frontman Ric Ocasek shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard his belief about the movement of music.

'I think you should be able to dance to every song. I always thought moving to a song was part of the mental attitude one should have. Not necessarily prescribed sorta dance steps, but basically movement. I always thought things were rhythmic in a way you could dance to, even if they were ballads."

John Waite's # 1 Hit 'Missing You' Turns 30,

'It was really unbelievable... It was the last thing anybody expected, for me to be
number one. YES ! (laughs). 'Missing You' touched a lot of people on a lot of different levels. People who have lost people. People who are obviously breaking up and trying to get on with their lives. But it was amazing how far ranging it was, the emotional range of that song.'

Dallas, TX - April 29, 2014. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 35th anniversary of Van Halen II with a look back at four formative Van Halen albums.
The quintessential American hard rock band Van Halen's 1978 debut all but guaranteed their election to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame on the first ballot, quickly becoming a benchmark for every hard rock band ever since. Six years later they even topped that with 1984, one of the most popular and influential albums ever. Every one of the four Van Halen albums in between, II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning and Diver Down would all sell millions and each would top its predecessor on the album sales chart.
These early years, although undeniably successful, came with a price, and by 1982 Van Halen had become a series of contradictions: even though selling a million each on Van Halen II and its successors, as well as hundreds of thousands of concert tickets, their record label was concerned over a lack of mainstream hits and a shallow well of songs. Creative frustration along with personal conflicts within the band would eventually lead to a post-David Lee Roth Van Halen.

Alex Van Halen describes to InTheStudio host Redbeard how visceral and primal their creative process was on those formative albums. “When we're in the studio and the amps are cranked to eleven on the dial and you're having a great time playing it, I think that's the one thing you shouldn't forget. We've been looking at songs, how do we write them, how do we come up with the ideas, but once we start playing, it's a perpetual thing.”
