This is Gary Hughes’ sixteenth album under the Ten moniker. 16! I’ve been a fan since the debut, having first heard it when Now & Then’s Mark Ashton sent me an advance to review in the early days of this site. Over the years members have come and gone, with Gary the one constant, and the sound has varied also – moving from melodic rock/AOR through to hard rock and even melodic metal on occasion.

This time it’s a bit of everything – there’s some heavier numbers, but also a ton of memorable AOR friendly songs – the most of any Ten album in the last several years. And I’m happy to report that the quality of these songs is as good as ever. I love what I’m hearing and this album stands out as one of the band’s better ones in a long rich history of great music. Nice to hear Gary singing in that warm AOR tone so familiar with the debut back in 1996.

Essential for Ten fans and well worthy for recent era fence sitters.

G'Day Gary, I hope you have a few minutes spare to type out some answers to the following questions. Thanks in advance for taking part!
First, let's go to the new Ten album Far Beyond The World.
This is obviously another collection of songs to add to the Ten legacy and you have written a lot of material over the years.
What did you have in mind when writing for this album?

We just felt it was time to return to our melodic roots for a while. The new album is basically an album of love songs. I suppose that would be the thread if any. I have gone for the commercial elements this time and I am very pleased with the material on the new album.

You write for yourself, Ten and other artists - do you set aside a time frame to write for each one, or write constantly, assigning songs as you see them fitting those other artists or yourself?
I write constantly. But when a particular project is imminent I put a couple of months concentrated time in for the project and add any material I have pre written at a later stage if I feel I don't have enough to go with.

Far Beyond The World contains some familiar styles and expected sounds, but also some new directions.
Do you set out to always try and include something new - break new ground with each release - or is it just a natural progression with your writing?

For the most part, we recorded it in the same ways as before, only this time we have gone for a more modern approach to the material. It is important to justify yourselves in today's market.
No-one can make music that sounds like it belongs to the eighties anymore. Not and survive.
We have always believed that Ten are one of the few bands with the
potential to `cross over' musically. We believe if we persist, that sooner or later its going to happen for us. Also the fans always liked the commercial side of Ten so why should we disappoint them.

How would you describe the material on the new album?
I think as set of songs…it is the most representational album of Ten as a band we have done so far.

In my opinion, it retains the heavier edge of the last couple, but has more melody in there again...
Many thanks for that.
We have tried to examine what are the good and the not so good aspects of our sound and capitalise on the good ones this time.

I love the Ozzy Osbourne like guitar riffing on High Tide. What was the idea behind that song?
Thanks. High Tide is possibly the heaviest song on the album.
A touch of blues about it. Some good soloing on guitar especially in the keychange part of the solo. It's very rare that I base a song purely on a riff but that was all I had with High Tide in the beginning and so we placed the emphasis on it.
It has an unexpected section in the middle where the entire track goes through
an old analogue flanger to emerge again.
Lyrically it is about being tired of drowning in a dying, deceitful
relationship. And deciding that enough is enough and that the charade is over.

Glimmer Of Evil is also an interesting song, what was the story behind that one?
Glimmer Of Evil is a very solid pounding drum and bass song.
Very blues orientated guitar wise. It has very interesting offbeat bridge sections.
Big harmonies again and a more bluesy vocal.
Lyrically it is about a physical midnight rendezvous with a woman who
is the embodiment of ones greatest fears.

I also love the anthem rocker Scarlet And The Grey - great hooks and melodic twists are at play within the song, that essentially is a rocker. How do you achieve the balance between the two?
Scarlet And The Grey has a modern sounding edge to it.
It is very guitar driven but with big vocal harmonies. I think the balance comes where we have been careful with overlaps.
The vocals and guitars seem to give way to each other well and compliment without interfering with each other. It has some flange effects on the lead vocal tails in the verses.
Lyrically it is based on the legend of "She".
An immortal princess who waits for the rebirth of her lost love only to loose her immortality when her lover gains his own immortality.

Ok, so what are your favourite songs from this album?
I would say What About Me?
It is a big sounding ballad in the style that Diane Warren might write for Aerosmith. It has some nice piano from Paul (Hodson).
It has some very nice mid gain guitar played through an oscillating Lesley
Cabinet. It has big harmonies. A sentimental vocal and a very personal feel.
Lyrically, it is an expression of ones real feelings in answer to the
question. How do you feel about me? What are your feelings?

Do you have a list of personal favourite songs that you have written for you or others across the years?
The Loneliest Place In The World - off the debut / The Name Of The Rose- off The Name Of The Rose / Arcadia - off The Robe / We Rule The Night - off Spellbound / Thunder In Heaven - off Babylon.

Ten as a band, sells a lot of units and has now made several records. What is the secret to your success, based on a music scene that often has it's detractors?
I have no idea really. We just keep making music we like and hope everyone else does too. Maybe also because we don't move with trends people know they can rely on Ten for an honest Melodic Hard Rock album. There's no gamble for the record buyer.

Would you also put it down to good song writing and good playing?
I hope so. I suppose it's not for me to say but I hope people see us as keeping the melody foremost in our writing.

You produced this album again, do you enjoy the ultimate control of being the man at the helm in the studio?
I suppose I do. Although I have to say that working with Tommy (Newton) this time was a great pleasure for me. He is a true professional and a great friend.

Your solo album took on a different feel. Will there be another album in that ballad vein in the future?
I hope so. I have lots of material in that vein and some songs that I am particularly proud of. So a lighter mood album of more soothing rockers and ballads could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

Vinny has obviously left the band, which is a great shame of course, but without airing any problems, do you know why he chose to leave?
His reasons were personal to him. Vinny was never a man to air any kind of dirty laundry in public and he still commands the respect of everyone in the band. We respect his decision and his reasons for making it. He is a great musician and I have had six years of immense pleasure of working with. I wish him nothing but the best with whatever he decides to do from here.

For sure….The band is often seen as the Gary and Vinny show, so will this allow an opportunity to highlight the rest of the band? After all you all play a tight show live together!
Yes. I think this will probably be the case.

In looking for a replacement - can you give us any exclusives as to who might have applied so far?
The closing date for submitting material for audition is December 1st. What I can say is that we have had a great response with over twenty entries so far. There are also some 'name' guitarists in there but it would be unprofessional of me to name any names at this stage. After the December 1st we will be whittling the list down to maybe 8 or 10 serious contenders for actual auditions later in December.

What are you looking for in a guitarist? You can obviously play yourself, but will this herald a change in the band's style?
I think that Vinny had his own instantly recognizable sound and style. Who ever the new guy is, it is bound to sound different. It will be interesting to see what flavours he brings to Ten's sound.

Looking forward to touring again early next year?
Very much. We are in the process of arranging dates for February and April next year.

Let's talk about a few of the other releases you have been involved in. Is there any chance of an official release of your debut solo album?
What was the story there - why did it become so obscure?

It was legal hassle with management in 1991 that effectively buried any chance of that album ever being re-issued again. Certainly with my endorsement.

One of my favourite ever melodic rock/AOR records is the debut solo Hugo album, which you played on as a band. Do you look back on that with any thoughts?
Yes. I still like that album also. I still rate Hugo as one of the best technical vocalists that I have ever recorded. It's a timeless album and I'm proud of my part in it.

I guess the big question is whether there will be a chance for another like it?
That would be down to Hugo. He has incredible responsibility now with his family business and all. I would like to think that we might work together again, but as for when...who knows. I wish him well in any case.

I would also love to hear more on your epic King Arthur album plans!! How are things going so far?
It's all written and in pre-production. I have approached a cast of vocalists which I will confirm to you as soon as it is finalised. I hope to begin recording in January.

Who have you lined up to play/sing on it?
As soon as I have the finalised cast you will be the first to know ;-)

Haha…thanks Gary! Can you fill us in on the whole concept? It will now be a multi-album project will it now?
It will be a double album and it will be based on the Arthurian Legends.
It is called "Once And Future King". As far as is possible when dealing with what is essentially a legend, I have stayed to the historical timescales and the feasible. Less to the manufactured Hollywoodisms.
It is my hope that it will one day be performed by its original cast in a mini Gods type of situation. A small theater, a great rock band with some string players and a cast of 10 great singers. Who knows, maybe some day?

Bob Catley's solo records are another great set of albums you have involved in. What is it like working with the elder statesman of melodic rock?
He has been an absolute pleasure to work with and a gentleman to boot. I am very proud of the albums we have made together. I am his biggest fan.

You have recorded three albums with him now - what has been the favourite?
I think different albums for different reasons but if I had to pick just one then I would say "Middle Earth".

Excellent! Speaking of that album, where do songs like the epic City Walls come from? Musically speaking?
Just what I imagined would be great songs for Bob to perform live.

Middle Earth is obviously the story of the Lord Of The Rings - for those unfamiliar with the story behind the album - would you mind repeating it - how you got started etc...?
It was a piece of literature I loved as a child. A complete fantasy world. Over the period of our first two albums together I discovered that Bob love the novels too. The rest, as they say, is history.

Was the album a success, as far as how you wanted to portray your love of the story?
I think so. When covering something like Lord Of The Rings you can only tread this way once in your career. I hope I have dealt with the subject matter in as complete a way as a single album can allow.

I think the album could find a new audience with fans of the story, now that the movie is about to open. Are you hoping for renewed interest?
Who knows. It would certainly be nice. Although a soundtrack placement for the trilogy of movies would have been even better for me and Bob ;-)

Is there anyone else Gary, that you would really love to write for or work with?
I would like to work with John Waite, David Coverdale, Anne Wilson, John Farnham, Joe Lynn Turner, Neal Schon, Steve Lukather, Brian May, to name just a few from a list of hundreds.

What else is planned for 2002 in the busy world of Gary Hughes?
Plenty of touring in February and April, with some festivals in the summer. Album wise, after the Arthurian concept there'll be another Ten album for release this time next year.

Sensational! Is there anything you would like to add or say to the fans of your music Gary?
Just that I wanted to thank them yet again for their seemingly limitless support over the years. It sounds corny I know but I really do appreciate it. I hope they like the new Ten album and we'll try to play to as many people as we can next year in support of it. Thanks for keeping melodic hard rock music alive and for keeping the faith.

Thanks again mate for answering these and taking the time to do so. Appreciate it!
As always you are very welcome. All the best!

“Illuminati” is said to be an elite, secret organization of world leaders, business authorities, innovators, artists, and other influential members of the global society. SIGNAL RED 'Under The Radar' Out February 23 via Escape

Also will be available on Vinyl limited edition double LP gatefold 180g!!!

The Musicians are:
Lee Small: Lead vocals and All Backing vocals (Phenomena / Shy)
Steve Grocott: All guitars, Keyboards, Strings (Ten)
Brian J Anthony: Bass (Steve Walsh)
Dave Anthony: Drums (Dennis DeYoung)

Mixed by: Brian J Anthony
Executive Producer: Khalil Turk

Signal Red is a brand new band from the UK and features two very respected musicians namely Guitarist Steve Grocott (ten) and Vocalist Lee Small (Phenomena / Shy / Lionheart). The collaboration first came together in February, 2013 when Steve was at a loose end. He had been in a band previously called “Sevendayz” which had recently folded and he contacted Lee as he had heard so much about him, mainly from the self-titled SHY album that appeared in 2011. The two hit it off straight away and it seemed inevitable that an album would follow.
Steve got caught up working with the UK band (Ten) as Gary Hughes asked him to be in the bands line-up for some shows and to feature on the new album, so the Signal Red production was halted for a while. Eventually Steve’s time freed up so he could once again concentrate on new material for the album and the whole thing has just progressed into a fantastic recording.

The collaboration with Lee was clearly a good match as Lee has already proved his worth with “Shy” as well as solo albums, the Phenomena project with Tom Galley and the rock band “Snowfall”. Lee is a very soulful, melodic vocalist and has featured on 17 albums as lead vocalist and on many more that have featured him as a guest, “Dante Fox” and “Magnum” to name but two.
This exciting new venture is bound to cause a stir, and with Brian Anthony twiddling the knobs (Steve Walsh) then this is going to be one album people will be talking about.
Lee came up with the title one day thinking that trying to get recognition for what you live and breathe for is like “living under the radar”. Well, they should not be living under it for much longer when this one hits the streets. This is a rock album that just begs to be heard, and we are sure that you will like what you hear.

Track List:
1. Defiant      4:36
2. Houdini      4:05
3. Stronger   4:57
4. Tell It To The Bees   3:57
5. Monster Truck   5:15
6. Pyramids Of Mars  4:44
7. Emotions In Motion  4:25
8. Highwire    4:40
9. Making Contact      4:15
10. Goth The Girl  4:04
11. The Time Machine   7:59

Words from Steve Grocott:

"The Signal Red collaboration came together around Feb 2013. I was at an loose end after the band I was in “Sevendayz” folded sometime after we got back from the United States after recording our debut album, so a little despondency had set in. I had heard of Lee from the SHY album, he has an outstanding voice so I just acted on impulse and contacted him asking if he needed any guitar parts doing for any future projects. Thankfully Lee sent a few tunes over so I got straight to work and sent them back to him. It was clear from the offset there was a musical connection, and it was inevitable that sooner or later we would start an album.

Between writing I went out on a limb and auditioned with “TEN”. To be honest I didn’t think I would get the gig but I was fortunate enough to be chosen by Mr Gary Hughes for a three-guitar revamped line up of the band. Obviously, I had to shelve writing with Lee for a while as I had to get my act together learning TENs material and writing solos for the new album. Lee was also in demand and was very busy with his other projects so it was a case of whenever time was available. Over about a 12- month period I would forward Lee a tune or two every now and then and just wait for him to work his magic, these tunes kept coming back sounding amazing. When we were at around song 6 or so I needed to know if we were on the right track so I contacted Escape Music and asked if I could forward some demos. I sent six songs to Khalil at Escape who thankfully liked what he heard and signed us up so I just needed another other six songs to complete the album. Around another 6 months later the songs were finished, originally, I played all the Instruments bar the drums which were programmed, I also drafted in Darrell Treece Birch to help on keys from TEN but the label wanted a more of a band feel and suggested we replace the drums and bass. They said they could have released it as it was but they wanted to push it further which was pleasing to hear. Khalil told me to forward my sessions to a chap in the states called Brian J Anthony a Bass player / Studio Mixing Mastering Engineer who had just finished recording the new Steve Walsh Album. Brian incidentally had also played the bass on that album so he was a natural choice for our project. Khalil also suggested David Anthony (Dennis DeYoung) for drumming duties which I’m glad he did. It was a bit of a learning curve sending sessions over to the other side of the world and to be honest I was a little apprehensive as I was precious about how the demos sounded already. There was no need to worry though Brian did a fantastic job and all’s that was needed was an album and project title, to be honest I hate the word project as this has been a collaboration but we eventually the label came up with SIGNAL RED Under the Radar. Lee came up with the title he just said one day that trying to get recognition for something that you live and breathe for is like living under the radar ... the rest is history I just hope people will like what they hear."

TEN Announces New Album "Gothica", Out July 7

British melodic hard rock band TEN has announced they will release their new album, "Gothica" on July 7.

The highly anticipated new album promises to be one of their strongest collection of songs to date. It is full of all the trademark textures and flavors we have come to expect from TEN, arguably one of the best and most consistent melodic hard rock bands in the genre. “Gothica” renews TEN’s longstanding association with the Frontiers label and proudly displays all the hallmarks of classic TEN albums and will surely continue to build upon the rich legacy that the great British rockers have forged over a career spanning 22 years and counting.

“Gothica” emerges as their darkest album to date. Embracing history, romance and erotic horror in equal measure as it does, the title proves to be a fitting name. As listeners, we are transported from the darker side of human nature to the nocturnal supernatural, a dramatic realm of nightmares and the forbidden. “Gothica” is cinematic in every sense of the word. A web of musically elaborate spells, evoking embers that spark the imagination courtesy of the classic song writing of vocalist Gary Hughes.

Of the album, Gary says, "I am extremely pleased with the collection of songs on "Gothica" as they feel like they belong together. The band are firing on all cylinders once again and it is a gift to the army of fans everywhere who have relentlessly supported us over the years. It is ironically fitting that our 13th studio album should be a little more sinister, at the same time retaining all the commercial traits usually associated with a Ten album."

Following their success on the recent albums “Albion” and “Isla De Muerta”, Hughes is joined once again by guitarists Dann Rosingana, Steve Grocott and John Halliwell along with bass player Steve McKenna, keyboard maestro Darrel Treece-Birch, and drummer Max Yates. On their third outing as a collective unit, the musicians in TEN have raised the bar even higher than they had previously. The album is full of stunning guitar work over a rich keyboard, bass, and drum tapestry with Hughes’ vocals once again bringing the nuances of the intricate lyrics to life.

“Gothica” was produced by Gary Hughes and mixed and mastered by Dennis Ward. TEN’s longstanding professional association with Dennis has been ongoing since he mixed their 2011 album, “Stormwarning”.

Additionally, the album features stunning original artwork by Stan W. Decker, depicting a beautiful enchantress reading incantations from a book whilst summoning shadowy characters from its pages. Stan has cleverly illustrated the piece in order to portray the characters emerging from the books pages as the actual characters from the songs on the album. The atmospheric sleeve photography is once again provided by the remarkably talented Adrian Ashworth.

Frontiers is proud to be working with the legendary TEN again and looks forward to sharing this stunning new album with the band's fans around the globe!

Legendary Black Sabbath and Dio drummer, Vinny Appice, joins heavy rock band Stagma in the studio to record their debut EP.

Stagma, the heavy rock band formed by composer/guitarist Alexandre Santos (Scar For Life), and featuring Jason Morgan (Orangefall) on vocals, Neil Fraser (TEN) on lead guitars and Joe Petro (Heaven and Earth) on bass have announced that drumming legend Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio) will join them to complete the lineup.

Vinny Appice, who has formed the backbone of such bands as Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell and more, live and in the studio, has recorded and co-written songs on over 25 albums, including many multi-platinum records. With over two decades of touring and the sale of millions of records behind him, the other members of Stagma are delighted that he will be joining them in the studio to record their debut EP, Stagma.

'I grew up listening to Vinny's drumming,' said Lisbon-based guitarist Alex Santos. 'For me, he's one of the heaviest drummers in rock history with a very personal style. Having Vinny on board is a privilege and he will add the vital ingredient that Stagma is looking for ...'

Stagma was formed in late 2015 when Alex Santos, guitarist, producer and composer with Scar For Life, got together with Jason Morgan, Neil Fraser and Joe Petro with the desire to form a new heavy rock band. Stagma was born out of this collaboration and since then Alex has composed seven new songs, with lyrics by Jason Morgan, to be featured on the band's debut EP, also titled Stagma ' due to be released this year. The band has been recording in Lisbon and LA and the EP will be mixed and produced at Alex's PressPlay Music studios in Lisbon.

Stagma will be planning performances surrounding the release in the coming months and new dates will be listed on the band's website.

TEN Return to the 'Battlefield' June 17 with Compilation Release

TEN signed to Rocktopia Records back in 2014, in a similar fashion to their one-two release of their much lauded debut and follow-up 'Name of the Rose' in a 6 month period back in 1996, 'Albion' and 'Isla De Muerta' were released in November 2014 and May 2015 respectively. Both albums gained highly positive reviews with Gaetano Di Falco's wonderful art making striking covers.

2015 also saw the release of the 'Dragon And Saint George' EP which contained 3 exclusive bonus tracks.

With 'Albion' now completely sold out it seemed a great idea to collect all the Ten songs from their Rocktopia Records period - including all the Japanese bonus tracks and exclusive EP tracks - onto one Limited Edition double CD release (500 copies only) and sell for the price of a single CD.

As well as Ten fans, hard rock fans who have not previously bought their albums should hopefully be tempted to check them out with such a Value For Money release.

This new collection is titled 'Battlefield' and once again has a wonderful exclusive cover by Gaetano Di Falco.

Release date - June 17, 2016

TEN Sign New Album Deal With Frontiers

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the newly signed partnership with the band TEN for the release of a new studio album in 2017. In addition, the label acquired the band's full catalogue and will plan special releases in both physical and digital formats.

In April 1998, Frontiers Records released it first international release ever, that was from TEN and the album was the band's official live album, 'Never Say Goodbye'. That release paved the way for more successful releases, both for the label and the band.

TEN was also the very first band for Frontiers to make a dent in the national album charts. That happened with the band's fourth studio album, 'Spellbound' which landed at #100 on the official album charts in Germany.

That record remains the band's most successful release and part of a catalog including classy Melodic Hard Rock masterpieces such as 'The Name of The Rose', 'Babylon' and the awesome debut album, 'X'. With a sound rooted in traditional British Hard Rock (think Whitesnake, Rainbow and UFO) and elements of American Arena Rock, TEN are now stronger than ever. As proof of this, the band's latest lyric video for "The Dragon And Saint George" will be showcased at SXSW Film, Interactive media and Music Festival at Austin, TX on the 18th and 19th of March - enjoy the video here: https://youtu.be/bI3ZRlpR9Q4

Singer and songwriter Gary Hughes says: 'We are proud to return to Frontiers for a multi album deal that will secure both future and past legacies. It is a particularly poignant return, in that it brings Ten home to the label which began 20 years ago, releasing the Ten double live album 'Never Say Goodbye'. The new studio album, that is to be recorded this year, promises to bear all the commercial trade marks of classic Ten with plenty of power too. In addition, Frontiers plans to reissue the entire Ten anthology in a 14 disc box set to be entitle 'Opera Omnia' , the Latin phrase for Complete Works. Ten are returning home in many ways and the future longevity of the band and it's songs, is preserved for this new chapter in the bands ever evolving history'.

Get ready for the return of TEN!

The new EP from Ten isn’t just a single track excuse to promote the current album – it’s a definite companion piece to the Isla De Muerta opus.
Featuring exclusive artwork from Gaetano Di Falco, the EP has three previously unreleased tracks. And what good tracks they are too.

The excellent album track The Dragon And Saint George is followed by an epic sounding Muskateers: Soldiers of the King - classic ‘pomp a-la-Ten’, while The Prodigal Saviour is an uptempo melodic rock ride as is the early AOR Ten sounding Is There Anyone With Sense.

The EP also includes the European bonus track 'We Can Be As One' in case you don’t have that. Well worth it of course. Simply put, more classic Ten.
