Greg Schmitt of WESU's syndicated radio show Noize In The Attic recently spoke with drum legends Carmine and Vinny Appice. Together they discuss Carmine's history and renewed involvement with Vinnie Vincent, Vinny's relationship with John Lennon and much more!

CarmineWhen I heard him with Vinnie Vincent Invasion, it wasn't the same Vinnie.  It was like - I don't know what he was trying to be, like an Yngwie or something...  He's beyond that.  He's a much better player than that.  He's like John Sykes.  John Sykes can play all that stuff, but you don't play it all the time.  You mix that up with a bit of blues and soul, and just great rock & roll like Jeff Beck or Clapton or those kind of guys.  And he can play that stuff. So, when I heard that album, and the mix and guitar was was so loud you couldn't even hear the rest of the band, so I was a little disappointed in that album, ya know?

I said, 'You can still play like you used to play?  Like I know you can play.  Usually you don't lose it.'  He goes, "No, I didn't lose it,' he said.  'I had a guitar in my hand every day; even when I was gone."

Vinny on playing with John Lennon'We're rehearsing, John walks in, watches us play, he sits down on a step...  And he started hanging out with us.  We're playing pool with him, and smoking joints and stuff.  He always wanted coke, though.  We didn't have coke...  So we would up doing three videos with him … And then we did a live gig he asaked us to do.  And then I found out a couple of years ago that was his last live gig. Ever.'

Vivian Campbell, Vinny Appice, Phil Soussan, and Andrew Freeman collectively known as Last in Line, are set to release their second album, “II” via Frontiers Music Srl on February 22.

Last In Line was formed in 2011, when Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, (Ronnie James Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the "Holy Diver", "Last In Line" - the album from which they took their name, and "Sacred Heart” albums) teamed up with esteemed vocalist Andrew Freeman. The debut al-bum “Heavy Crown” was released in February 2016, landing at #1 on the Billboard HeatSeekers Chart. Initially, the release had been preceded by tragedy when bassist Jimmy Bain unexpectedly passed away at the age of 68 on January 23, 2016. Last In Line, honoring what they knew would be Bain’s wish to keep the band moving, brought in renowned bassist Phil Soussan (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) and committed to sustained touring in support of the album, hitting festivals, headlining clubs, and sharing the stage with metal luminaries such as Saxon and Megadeth.

In late 2017, the band gathered in L.A. to start the recording of the second album, which was produced by the band members and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End: machine, ex-Dokken), who also produced the debut album. Having really gelled as a band while touring in support of the debut album, the songwriting came readily to the members. They’ve created a record that shows a big progression in sound, while immediately being recognizable as Last In Line thanks to Vinny Appice’s rhythms, thunderous bass from Soussan, amazing vocals from Andrew Freeman, and the roaring guitars of Vivian Campbell.

APPICE
--  First studio album from the two legendary drum brothers together -
- Album release October 27th, 2017 -

You're unlikely to find a phenomenon like Carmine and Vinny Appice a second time in the history of rock music. For more than forty years, the two brothers have been among the most sought-after and renowned rock drummers worldwide. Carmine and Vinny (each of them on their own) can be heard on numerous legendary albums and have toured countless times with some of the world's greatest acts. Carmine embarked on his musical path in the 1960s with the unforgotten Vanilla Fudge, manning in the course of his illustrious career the drums for superstars such as Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne, among others. His brother Vinny, who is eleven years his junior, looks back on an equally spectacular career, having worked with acts such as Black SabbathHeaven & Hell and Dio, among others. With the exception of the live album Drum Wars – Live! (2014), there has been no direct collaboration between the two so far.-  That's about to change! Sinister is the first joint studio album by Carmine and Vinny and was recorded with the support of a number of prestigious guests. Vinny: 'As Ringo said: with a little help from our friends.'

Sinister consists of a total of 13 tracks, recorded by Carmine and Vinny together with distinguished colleagues. -´Killing Floor` and -´Future Past` feature the wonderful Craig Goldy (together with bassist Tony Franklin), Franklin resurfacing, together with Paul Shortino, on -´Suddenly` and on -´You Got Me Running`. Shortino also lends his awesome vocals to -´War Cry` and the programmatic -´Monsters And Heroes`, the latter also featuring Bulletboys guitarist Mick Sweda, while Shortino teams up with Whitesnake stringsman Joel Hoekstra on -´War Cry`. Talking of vocals: -´Sinister`, -´Danger` (bass: Phil Soussan), -´In The Night` (guitar: Bumblefoot) and -´Sabbath Mash` (guitar: Erik Turner, keyboards: Erik Norlander) are all sung by Jim Crean, while Chas West recorded the vocal parts for -´Killing Floor`, Scotty Bruce featuring on -´Future Past` and Robin McAuley on -´Riot`. The biggest surprise of all: Carmine himself doubles as vocalist on -´You Got Me Running`. Vinny-Carmine has been singing lead and background for years. He-´s a very good singer and I-´m glad he sang one number on this record.'

So fans can look forward to a haunting rock album which the Appice brothers plan to premiere live on stage as soon as possible. Carmine-We cannot wait to take the album on the road! Heavy drums and heavy songs. It will kill!'

BOB KULICK Unleashes His 'Skeletons In The Closet'

Artist:
Friday, September 15, 2017
Categories:
News Feed

Fifty years is a long time to have a career in any type of industry. However fifty years in the cut throat music business is a miracle unto itself. Not to mention a relevant, successful run in not only one but several fields.

Grammy Award winning guitarist / songwriter / producer extraordinaire BOB KULICK began his musical profession at 16 – when most high schoolers are still trying to figure out where they’re going in life - appearing on the 1966 album, ‘Winchester Cathedral’ from the Random Blues Band, the “baby band” that Bob played in that played The Café Wha in New York’s Greenwich Village alongside Jimmy James and the Blue Flames (later rechristened Jimi Hendrix). “This was the first club gig I had experienced and it completely changed my world!” recalls the guitarist.

1973 saw Kulick make the connection that he has been associated the most with throughout his career. He auditioned for - and got passed over by - KISS. Instead of being dejected the six stringer aligned himself with the band over the years, playing on the studio material on ‘KISS Alive 2.’ providing solos on the ‘Killers’ album, co-writing “Naked City” from ‘Unmasked’ and guesting on Paul Stanley’s 1979 solo album and tour a decade later. He even suggested his brother to the band. “It took multiple tries but we finally got him there!” Bob laughs.

Aside from KISS, Bob has, of course, played with Meat Loaf, Balance, Lou Reed, W.A.S.P., Skull, Murderer’s Row and several other bands and studio projects over the years.

Fifty one years after making his recording debut, the well-respected axe slinger has decided it’s time to release his first actual solo album, Skeletons in the Closet. Kulick explains, “I started writing new music in 2015 which then turned-into songs co-written with my former Balance bandmate, Doug Katsaros and my brother Bruce. I've had the thought of doing a solo project using some of the musicians I had worked with in the past for some time. Now armed with 4 new original songs my girlfriend (photographer, Julie Bergonz) introduced me to producer Bobby Ferrari at Vegas View Recording and he loved the idea of working with me, the guest artists and the four new songs and that introduction led to the making of this album.

A ten song affair, Skeletons in the Closet is half brand new songs and half material from his storied past. “The idea of doing these new songs / retrospective songs as one CD only came to me after the new original songs were done. Then we added our cover of “Goldfinger” and pulled five of my all-time favourite songs out from my "closet" creating Skeletons in the Closet.”

Kicking off with "Rich Man," the uplifting track is the lyrical juxtaposition between what we don't have and being "rich" because we have "you" - a girlfriend, lover or a guitar or whatever it is that makes everything else alright. "Not Before You," co-written with Bob's brother Bruce, is a specific reference to, in this case, a new love. "London," Bob says, "is Jack the Ripper sideways. Our homage to Sweeney Todd and a 6 / 8 tempo and feel that, with Dee Snider's vocal, takes you to that place in London where 'No one hears you scream in the darkness.' Frankie Banali's unique drumming concept helped turn this into a larger than life song. "Goldfinger" is a tongue in cheek tribute to James Bond films - a heavy version of the classic Shirley Bassey song. "Player" is a theme we're all familiar with - getting "played by someone." This is another take on that story. Bob's back catalogue begins its appearance with Murderer's Row's "India" with an Indian / mid-eastern metal double bass drum guitar gallop and with a coral sitar solo played by Kulick. With the title track, Bob states, "I often look to start and / or end recorded songs by setting a mood, vibe or sound effect that 'speaks.' In "Skeletons in the Closet" you can hear the skeleton sounds in the beginning of the song, helping set the dark mood." "Can't Stop the Rock" "was written produced and recorded when David Eisley and I came up with the Sponge Bob song "Sweet Victory." This is another "rock" lyric song but a fun one we came up with which went great with “Sweet Victory” at that time. From Bob's Skull days, "Guitar Commandos" sees him trading lead guitar licks with his brother Bruce. "It's basically a song about the road and touring," he says. Wrapping up the album, "Eyes of a Stranger" is a song about how crazy love is. "The ups and downs of love, ya know, but also an uplifting and driving track to finish things off."

It’s said that the best things always take time. With Skeletons in the Closet BOB KULICK drives that expression home.

- First studio album from the two legendary drum brothers together -
- APPICE album release in autumn 2017 -
- Guest appearances by members and ex-members of Whitesnake, Dio, WASP, Quiet Riot and many more -

The two legendary drum brothers Carmine (Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Blue Murder, King Kobra) and Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio, Last In Line) are recording their first ever studio album together this spring under the name APPICE.

'After decades in this crazy music business, we will sit down for the first time and record songs TOGETHER for an amazing new studio album! The album will feature both new songs and classic tracks from our history! This is very exciting for us as we will have, as Ringo said, 'A Little Help from My/Our Friends'. With that in mind, the result will be great sounding spine-shaking rhythmic foundations, along with BIG giant melodic guitars from hell, and on top, blazing vocals and melodies that will tear it all up! A first in a lifetime for us brothers!" say Carmine and Vinny.

Expect some great friends/guests to contribute to this album including Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake), Paul Shortino (Quiet Riot, Rough Cutt), Johnny Rod (WASP, King Kobra), Craig Goldy (Dio), Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder) and members of Last In Line among others.

Carmine says: 'I am so excited to be doing this new Appice CD. It is always a challenge and fun doing music with Vinny. This CD is no exception and we will be doing cool songs with double drumming and lots ear candy for our fans, not to mention playing with some of our special friends. The recording process is coming out great. Cannot wait to finish and take it on the road! Heavy drums and heavy songs. It will kill!'

Vinny adds: 'A studio album that was years in the making has now come to life! Our first ever studio CD together. With great songs, musicians and of course drums and rhythms that will overwhelm your ears and fascinate your mind!'

Olly Hahn (Head of Steamhammer) says: "It's an honour to welcome these legendary drummers to the Steamhammer family. Be prepared for an album filled with great musicians and a lot of drum wars!!!"

The yet untitled studio album will be released in October 2017 through SPV/Steamhammer as CD digipack, double gatefold vinyl, download and stream.

More news within the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

PROJECT NIGHTSCAPE Debut Album Available For Pre-Order

Pre-order Now to Receive Free Digital Copy of Tie-in Novel

Portland, Oregon, USA Imperiad Entertainment is pleased to announce the November 11 digital release and December 9 CD release of Project Nightscape’s debut album, To Sin Against Our Mercies.

Based on the series of supernatural thrillers by writer-film director David W. Edwards, this progressive hard rock concept album features the melodic guitar stylings of Grammy-nominee Tony Gaglio. Early reviewers have compared the music favorably to classic Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Rush. The record includes musical contributions from Vinny Appice (Dio), Mirabai Peart (Joanna Newsom’s band), Tobin Sprout (Guided by Voices) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). The album’s story concerns an itinerant, nineteenth-century doctor who encounters a blind boy in communication with the dead.

The 13-track album is now available for previewing and pre-ordering from Project Nightscape’s Bandcamp page. Anyone who places an order before November 11 will receive a free PDF copy of the action-horror tie-in novel, The Alchemist & Azriel upon its release in early 2017. The book will explore the fate of the supernatural threat at the center of To Sin Against Our Mercies. Edwards’ last Nightscape novel was characterized by Kirkus Reviews as “entertaining, poignant, and heady, a thoroughly enjoyable thrill ride powered by jolts of philosophy.”

The songs on this collection reflect its tight symphonic design, complete with character-based musical themes or motifs. “Tony and I established the track sequencing at the conceptual stage in order to properly develop and incorporate recurring motifs,” Edwards said. “From the beginning, the album was conceived as an extended suite to ensure the diverse material added up to more than the sum of its parts.”

Tracks range from the haunting gospel-inflected rock of the first single, “(Living in) Sacred Time” and the prog-pop of “Only Reason” to the jazzy, off-kilter “Inmortuorum Memorias” and the galloping metal of “Occulted.” The climax of the record is a ten-minute plus ‘mini-epic,’ “Starlost,” that serves as a thematic coda to the main narrative. This song has it all: acoustic and electric guitars; real strings (cello, violin and viola); dueling male and female vocals; a variety of keyboard sounds, including Mellotron and Hammond B-3 organ; ripping keyboard and guitar solos (and duets); and complex but indelible vocal harmonies.

The sheer range of musical styles was both a challenge and a source of inspiration for Gaglio, the album’s sole guitarist and main songwriter. “We worked hard to make sure each track stood on its own merits and at the same time, contributed to a cohesive whole,” he said. “Attentive listeners will definitely be rewarded by the attention to detail. Many of the songs are linked through subtle motifs, some of which you may not hear so much as feel.”

An early mix of the album’s first single, “(Living in) Sacred Time,” debuted on September 9 as part of a free compilation CD distributed to opening night attendees of the sold out ProgPower USA festival in Atlanta. The song is now streaming in its entirety on Bandcamp. Key retail partners include Amazon, Bandcamp, CDBaby and iTunes.

LAST IN LINE---the band that features current DEF LEPPARD/former DIO guitarist Vivian Campbell, former DIO/BLACK SABBATH drummer Vinny Appice and vocalist Andrew Freeman (RAIDING THE ROCK VAULT/OFFSPRING) have confirmed five USA concert dates for October before they head out on a UK/Europe tour. After memorable appearances at the LOUD PARK Festival in Japan and Rocklahoma in the USA, requests came soaring in from fans, demanding that LAST IN LINE play more stateside shows. To round out the line-up bassist Phil Soussan (OZZY OSBOURNE, VINCE NEIL) has been enlisted after original DIO bassist/original LAST IN LINE member Jimmy Bain passed away. Erik Norlander (Ex-ASIA) will handle keyboards.

October 22: Costa Mesa, California-Tiki Bar, 7pm http://tikibaroc.com
October 23: West Hollywood, California-The Whisky, 7pm http://www.whiskyagogo.com/site/
October 28: Sacramento, California-The Boardwalk, 7pm http://www.theboardwalkpresents.com/
October 29: Reno, Nevada-Rock Bar http://rockbartheater.com/
October 30: Las Vegas, Nevada-Vamp'd http://www.vampdvegas.com/

Vivian Campbell says, "We're thrilled and humbled by the reaction the ‘Heavy Crown’ album has gotten and in due course we look forward to playing more shows across the entire U.S. as schedule and resources permit."

Earlier this year, saw the release of the well-received, debut album from LAST IN LINE, "Heavy Crown." The album landed at #1 on the Billboard Heatseeker Chart, #6 on the Hard Rock albums chart and #22 on the Top Rock chart.

What started as a casual and fun reunion jam in a Los Angeles rehearsal room in 2011 has grown into a fully-fledged recording project that has taken on a life of its own. LAST IN LINE, the band, takes its name from the second DIO album released in 1984. Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain and Vivian Campbell were Ronnie Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the Holy Diver, Last In Line and Sacred Heart albums records that defined the classsic early Dio sound and became a part of rock history.

Appice stated that LAST IN LINE would be playing more dates during late 2016 and 2017 as Campbell’s Def Leppard duties eased off. He also praised LAST IN LINE's live performances, saying: "The band kicks ass. It's so much fun to play together. We have a great time on and off the stage. It's just a real pleasure playing, especially with Viv again. We're not doing this to try to make money; we're doing this because we want do it. And Viv is totally enjoying playing this stuff and revisiting his old solos. With the addition of Phil and Erik we have become a powerhouse again.”

Phil Soussan, who is the heir to the late Jimmy Bain’s place in the band, says: “It is such a thrill to be playing with LAST IN LINE. Jimmy and I were not only bass players in ‘sister’ bands but also longtime friends. I am proud to be able to do him justice and to pay tribute to his legacy. In fact we are all friends and former bandmates. Vinny keeps me on ‘10’ and we bring the thunder.  It is an honor to finally share a stage with Vivian and to reunite with Andrew who is ‘the real deal’ and Erik who brings so much texture to the music. The band just feels so right ...and heavy!”

Keyboard Virtuoso, Erik Norlander also weighs in: "Vinny and Phil are an absolutely thunderous rhythm section that is truly genre defining! It’s so great to be playing with them again. Andrew is an unstoppable powerhouse vocalist and an amazing frontman. We always feel so confident going on stage with him. And, Vivian leads the charge of this mighty brigade with his unfathomably heavy virtuoso guitar work. It’s a thrill to weave my keyboard parts around his iconic riffs.”

The LAST IN LINE project has been especially significant to Vivian Campbell, who has been playing to enthusiastic audiences on tour with both DEF LEPPARD and LAST IN LINE while battling cancer. He says, "I'm pleased to report that my cancer treatments are going as well as I could hope for and that my ability to continue my work during this difficult time has given me even greater purpose in both life and work. It's been an absolute pleasure to re-connect with my old friends and our past musical legacy and to build upon that with Andrew on the ‘Heavy Crown’ album.”

Campbell adds, “Losing Jimmy was a very bitter blow for all of us, but we will continue to honor him through performing the music he created. Jimmy would very much approve of his old friend Phil Soussan joining us to help make this happen and the addition of Erik Norlander on keys elevates the band to new musical heights. I find tremendous joy in each and every note that we play together."

VIP Packages can be purchased at the band’s official website. They include: Meet and Greet with Last In Line, VIP Souvenir Laminate, Guitar Pic Set, Group Picture with the band, Personal items autographed and Autographed Band Photo

Legendary Black Sabbath and Dio drummer, Vinny Appice, joins heavy rock band Stagma in the studio to record their debut EP.

Stagma, the heavy rock band formed by composer/guitarist Alexandre Santos (Scar For Life), and featuring Jason Morgan (Orangefall) on vocals, Neil Fraser (TEN) on lead guitars and Joe Petro (Heaven and Earth) on bass have announced that drumming legend Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio) will join them to complete the lineup.

Vinny Appice, who has formed the backbone of such bands as Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell and more, live and in the studio, has recorded and co-written songs on over 25 albums, including many multi-platinum records. With over two decades of touring and the sale of millions of records behind him, the other members of Stagma are delighted that he will be joining them in the studio to record their debut EP, Stagma.

'I grew up listening to Vinny's drumming,' said Lisbon-based guitarist Alex Santos. 'For me, he's one of the heaviest drummers in rock history with a very personal style. Having Vinny on board is a privilege and he will add the vital ingredient that Stagma is looking for ...'

Stagma was formed in late 2015 when Alex Santos, guitarist, producer and composer with Scar For Life, got together with Jason Morgan, Neil Fraser and Joe Petro with the desire to form a new heavy rock band. Stagma was born out of this collaboration and since then Alex has composed seven new songs, with lyrics by Jason Morgan, to be featured on the band's debut EP, also titled Stagma ' due to be released this year. The band has been recording in Lisbon and LA and the EP will be mixed and produced at Alex's PressPlay Music studios in Lisbon.

Stagma will be planning performances surrounding the release in the coming months and new dates will be listed on the band's website.

The hyperbole has been high and I must admit, on paper the idea of Vinny Appice and Jimmy Bain (RIP) joining Vivian Campbell in a Dio-inspired new material project was very tantalizing.
I mean, who wouldn’t be excited at the prospect of Vivian returning to his roots and really getting a chance to shred again?

But try as I may, I have not been able to get into this album. I’ll take some heat for that, but it’s all about personal taste and my opinion is that this album hasn’t worked in a couple of areas.
First – Andrew Freeman. Monster voice and commanding frontman, but I just don’t take to his vocal style on this album. Too much shouting, it’s just not gelling with me.
That’s not so say it’s not an impressive performances, but I just can’t warm to it.
Second – pacing. As is the case with a lot of Dio material, the overall tempo favors a slow, methodical pace with occasional forays into something more uptempo.
But in most cases, I really struggle with albums that plod along.

The album opens mid-pace with the impressive rocker Devil In Me and immediately launches into the fastest track of the album with Martyr. That’s my kind of pace.
Starmaker is haunting and has potential, but I struggle with the vocals and the ultra-slow pace, which continue into Burn This House Down.

I Am Revolution hits the fastest mark of the entire album with a flurry of guitars and a rapid beat. This is what I was hoping to hear more of, cool track.
But then Blame It On Me heads straight back to ultra-slow plodding heavy metal. Already Dead tries to break out of that pace but doesn’t manage it for long.
Curse The Day has an interesting moody and somewhat melodic hook, but still remains relatively slow moving.

The next two tracks pick up the pace a little, but not enough.
The Sickness is a slow metal ballad or sorts. Some cool riffing, but not enough to save the second half of the album.

Jeff Pilson handles production responsibilities with his usual professional aplomb, and fans waiting to hear Vivian Campbell shred again are rewarded with some fine performances here.
I know there will be a great many that love this record and it isn’t without merit. It’s just one of those records that despite the obvious quality, hasn’t made a lasting impression to these ears.

Resurrection Kings is another supergroup project from the minds of Frontiers Records and the production/writing hand of Alessandro Del Vecchio. It’s a similar formula to the similarly named Revolution Saints.
Alessandro Del Vecchio continues to grow in stature as a producer. This album has a big hard rock sound that is harder edge and rawer than his Revolution Saints production. The material also lends itself more to American hard rock than the more melodic tones of Rev Saints.

Of course, part of that is down to the fired up delivery of vocalist Chas West (Bonham/Lynch Mob). Joining the star vocalist is an equally impressive lineup of names:  Craig Goldy (Dio/Giuffria) shredding and riffing in such fine company as the rhythm section of Sean McNabb and Vinny Appice.

The album starts strong, but I’m not sure it holds together as well towards the end. The material becomes a little too familiar and I’m not sure why, but Chad West’s vocals throughout seem to always be at maximum volume. There isn’t a lot of light and shade here and by the end of the album, I’ve definitely heard enough.

Distant Prayer is a heavy, somewhat bombastic opener with a surprisingly commercial chorus and hook. I love the pace of the track, really gets the album off to a flyer.
Livin' Out Loud is much slower and finds itself in that heavy, slow groove that metal often uses –and I hate. Thankfully there’s a strong chorus in play and the song fits quite well between two faster tracks. If it wasn’t for the memorable chorus, this track really would have killed momentum,
Wash Away is pure commercial hard rock. A free flowing vibe and a big chorus and melodic verse. Very catchy and although miles heavier than Giuffria, it has a certain melodic kinship with the AOR legends.
Who Do You Run To has a classic 80s guitar squeal to kick it off and is another pretty commercial track, with a mid-tempo beat. It’s not a ballad but not quite a rocker either. But solid with another pretty decent chorus.

Fallin' For You is a moody mid-tempo tune that definitely reminds me of David Reece’s solo material. Big, moody, loud, but catchy in a metal kinda way. Some impressive guitar work within the 6 minute track.
Never Say Goodbye is as it suggests – a big commercial rock ballad. West soars, the chorus goes with him and AOR fans will enjoy this. The guitars still manage to shred behind the vocals.
Path Of Love is the kind of track I don’t normally like – slow, bluesy, big groove. It has musical integrity and some fine chops on display, but these types of song rarely have a great chorus. This one ain’t bad but this is where the album starts to lose me.
Had Enough moves a little faster but still holds a little in reserve. An ok chorus and some nice soloing feature.

Don't Have To Fight No More moves faster still and has a stronger chorus too. A good track to position here in the album’s sequence. It grooves and it flows well.
Silent Wonder has again, a less memorable chorus, but a good pace and some melodies that grow over time. But there’s no escaping the fact that the album has started to sound a little samey.
What You Take is similar to the last several tracks, featuring a strong sound, ok chorus and plenty of guitar flurries. It’s a bit slow and doesn’t feature a strong chorus to end the album on.

Great performances and a strong production. Goldy is the star of the show here I think and West delivers an authorative vocal, even if it is always set to 10. Or 11 even…
The songs aren’t as strong as the Rev Saints record, but this is a different musical beast.
It definitely hits the target of 80s inspired American hard rock, but perhaps could have been even better.

BLACK SABBATH: "When I first joined the band, I was a kid. I brought my drums down to audition with them in my '67 Mustang. It started out from there and it was always 'you're in the band until Bill Ward comes back'. They expected him to come back. This was his baby."

Says guitarist Vivian Campbell, "When we started this project a few years ago, the initial idea was to reunite the original Dio band to play the songs we wrote and recorded with Ronnie in the early 1980’s. Joined by Andrew Freeman on vocals, we played a handful of shows in southern California, the UK, and Japan. It was a limited ambition, but it brought us great joy in reconnecting to this great music, to each other, and to our collective history."
The new songs featured on the debut Last In Line album are all co-written by the four band members.
"When we first got together as the Last In Line line-up, our ambition at that time didn’t extend to writing and recording any new music, says Campbell, "but when we were offered the opportunity to do so by Frontiers, we decided to enter the studio to write this new album in the very same spirit as we did the Holy Diver album;  Back in 1982 Ronnie, Vinny, Jimmy and I went into Sound City studios to kick around ideas and riffs, and about six weeks later we started laying down the tracks for what was to become the Holy Diver album."

The new material was written after the band toured the classic Dio songs. During the tour, when the band started really connecting with each other musically, that’s when they decided the time was right to start writing new material for what was to become the Last In Line debut album.  Vivian Campbell will also be putting time aside to go on tour with Last In Line when not touring with Def Leppard.  Expect 2016 tour dates and festival appearances to be announced in the coming weeks.

LAST IN LINE – OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY
What started as a casual and fun reunion jam in a Los Angeles rehearsal room in 2011 has, in the ensuing years, grown into a fully-fledged recording project that has taken on a life of it’s own. Last In Line, the band, takes it’s name from the second Dio album released in 1984. Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain and Vivian Campbell were Ronnie Dio’s co-conspirators and co-writers on the Holy Diver, Last In Line and Sacred Heartalbums – the records that defined the classic early Dio sound and have gone on to become part of Rock History!

During that first jam, it was immediately apparent that the chemistry of the original band was very much intact – even after a 27 year hiatus. The excitement generated by that rediscovery led to a second session, this time they called in vocalist Andrew Freeman (a friend of Vinny's) whose credits include singing in the Raiding The Rock Vault production in Las Vegas and background vocals for The Offspring.
Andrew has the vocal power to complete the original powerhouse sound of the Dio band.

Hearing Andrew’s interpretations of the songs was a revelation for Vivian, who immediately suggested that they book some local shows for fun. In Vivian’s mind, the fact that Andrew could put a different spin on the songs made it an interesting prospect, and one that would justify taking things to the next stage, outside of the rehearsal room.

Over the ensuing years, a handful of local LA shows led to a handful of overseas shows in the UK and Japan, and eventually to an offer from Frontiers Records to record a new album of original material.

During the course of 2014 the band wrote and recorded 12 new songs under the guidance of longtime friend and producer Jeff Pilson. It proved to be a symbiotic relationship with Jeff that captured the organic crunch of the band and brought out the very best in Andrew’s voice and delivery.

In February of 2016, Last In Line’s debut album, Heavy Crown will be released, with the debut track, Devil In Me leading the charge. The band will gear up for a highly anticipated  tour in both the U.S. and Europe in support of the record. The "live"set will include new songs alongside their early classic Dio-era works.
