Richie Kotzen: Breaking up is hard to do....

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Richie Kotzen talks about his new solo albumm Change, plus all things Mr. Big and that new Influences & Connections record.

Hi Richie, thanks for taking the time out to answer some questions for me. How has the album been going where it has already been released?
I am very happy about the way the CD has been doing. In Japan we have had 2 TV tie ins. One with the song Change and another with the song Get A Life. I will be touring Japan in September and plan on touring Europe in November. We made a new deal with Frontiers for Europe and they have been doing great with the new CD. Change will
be released in north America on Shrapnel Records within the next few months.

You are an extremely diverse guitar player - has that helped in the
marketing of your name, or hindered as the press doesn't know what category
to box you into?

I can't say if it has helped or hurt. I am who I am. When I made my first CD I became known as a guitarist. As time went on and I made more records I was able to express myself artistically. I think the last CDs change and slow really define who I am as a recording artist. My music has never been considered mainstream and I am fine with that. I am very satisfied making music that I believe in and very grateful to have an audience who accepts these records.

Do you have a style that you personally enjoy playing more than any other?
I have songs that I have written that I enjoy playing more than others.
Some songs work better live than others. I have made a lot of instrumental
music but the songs I enjoy playing most are the ones with vocals.

Do you have a favourite solo album out of al those you have so far recorded?
My favorite CD is most definitely the new CD change but I say that every time
I make a new CD.

Your work in Mr. Big was varied also. The bluesy Get Over It was well received, but I must admit, I though Actual Size is a monster of an album. Does it bug you that the album didn't get a wider release then only in Japan?
No, I knew going in that the CD would be made for Japan. The style of record
Mr. Big made was not something that Atlantic wanted to push in some of the other territories however it did very well in Japan and southeast Asia. As a band member my concern was making the best CD we could for our market and I am satisfied with the result.

Is there any progress on that issue, or is the album too old now to
market/release anywhere else?

to be honest it is not something I have thought about. the band has been broken up for more than a year and there is no reason to believe we will work together again. it is sort of a non issue at this time.

Any idea where I can find that farewell concert on DVD?? It's bloody hard to find and I've had others e-mail me the same thing!
I would suggest taking a trip to Tokyo... I know tower sells it there.

I remember reading comments you made at the time the band split - something
along the lines of "oh no, not again!" How do you deal with such events?

I played with Mr. Big long enough to make 2 studio CDs and several compilation/live CDs. I had a great time working with all the members of Mr. Big and even got to share 2 guitar magazine covers with Paul Gilbert their original guitarist. Over all the experience was quite positive for me but we all felt it was time to move on.

Was this as bad as or worse than the split from Poison? Once again, I thought
the album you did with them was fabulous and was always disappointed there
couldn't be more.

I enjoyed the split with poison much more. a lot more excitement. This break up was quite dull.

Is there much material within the Kotzen vaults that has not been released?
I have plenty of unreleased material but it is not very good. That is why it
never came out...

Let's talk about Change - it's now to be released in Europe through
Frontiers records, you must be happy with that?

I am very excited about working with Frontiers. They seem really into the record and understand the music. I was recently in the UK performing and was surprised to see how many people want to hear the new record. I am looking forward to going back to Europe.

It's another very varied record - how would you describe the music and
songs on this album to someone that hasn't heard it yet?

To me its just a Ritchie Kotzen CD. I don't understand when people talk about my style being so varied but I hear it all the time so it must be true. when I make a CD I write
songs and put them on the disk. this is the result. it is simply a Ritchie Kotzen CD.

And an acoustic version of Shine. What prompted you to do that track again?
My label in Japan wanted something different so we decided to do a version of my song shine with me singing. Since there already was a band version I made it acoustic and wrote a new bridge for it.

And where does the bonus track high come from?
I went in the studio one night and decided to do a live acoustic version of the song.
Frontiers heard it and decided it would be a cool bonus track to add to the CD.

The Influences And Connections project is very interesting - who's idea was it?
I'm not sure... however a large portion of the CD was recorded in my new studio Headroom in north Hollywood. You can see it at www.headroom-inc.com
I know a lot of the vocals were done there. John Waite, Joe Lynn Turner... I got them Keanu Reeves and Bret Domrose from Dogstar to play my song Shine.
I think the idea was to have friends of Mr. Big members play our songs on the
CD so its not really a tribute CD exactly.

It is being released as volume 1 - any idea who might be the subject of
future volumes and will you be a part of those?

I don't really know but if I'm asked and I like the music then maybe...

You actually sing lead on to be with you. Any reason you chose that track?
I wanted to sing something that would be unexpected.

You have a good website set up - do you interact with those that use the
forum very often and do you see the site as an important tool to keep in
contact with fans?

Yes I do post from time to time. I like hearing from the listeners. I like knowing what they think about the live shows and the CDs. I usually go to the site once a month and check out what is going on. it brings everyone much closer.

What's next for Ritchie then? Any chance of a new proper Mr. Big album in
the future?

I would say no chance of a new Mr. Big CD in the near future. I am touring Japan in September with plans to come to Europe in November. There will be a new Kotzen CD next year along with a jazz CD that is currently in the works. I am very excited about this project. I have been speaking with Lenny White about playing drums and doing some co-writes and he has been very positive. Hopefully it will come together.

Anything you would like to add?

RICHIE KOTZEN To Release 21st Solo Album 'Salting Earth'

Artist:

RICHIE KOTZEN tossed convention on its ear by actually taking one step back in order to move two steps forward. “It’s something I really needed to do in order to reset myself,” he explains.

Kotzen’s “charge to recharge” was officially put into play following the mega-success of the 2015–16 tour behind his band The Winery Dogs’ sophomore effort, the oh-so-appropriately named HOT STREAK. And the man’s reset manifesto wound up hitting all the right buttons too. The proof is on display deep within the grooves of SALTING EARTH, which veers from the balls-out, heads-up declaration of the opening track and first single, “End of Earth,” to the burning-sky harmonic thrust of “Thunder” to the Prince-like funk-jazz swing of “This Is Life” to the acoustified take-me-as-I-am self-reflection of the album’s final song, “Grammy.”

The majority of SALTING EARTH is the result of KOTZEN’s one-man production machine, with the exception of Julia Lage adding background vocals to “Make It Easy,” a tasty, sing-along groove stew. “It’s really not deliberate when the record is finished and suddenly I’m the only performer on it,” Kotzen admits. “It actually comes out of my process of writing and documenting my ideas. It started back in the late-’80s when I had a makeshift studio in my parents’ barn. I grew up fairly isolated, and I soon realized in order to get this music out of my head and onto a format where I could listen to it, I’d have to figure out how to do it alone.”

KOTZEN’s previous solo release, 2015’s diverse, far-reaching CANNIBALS, was a well-received hit among his core fan base, and SALTING EARTH cuts like the aforementioned “End of Earth,” “Thunder,” and “Divine Power” all showcase the scorching guitar solos and soaring vocals that one would expect from a KOTZEN solo album. That said, there’s also quite a vulnerable side on display here that’s perhaps best demonstrated in the stripped-down approach to the album’s closing salvo, “Grammy.”

Here’s the complete track listing of SALTING EARTH:

1. End of Earth
2. Thunder
3. Divine Power
4. I’ve Got You
5. My Rock
6. This Is Life
7. Make It Easy
8. Meds

‘SALTING EARTH’ 21st SOLO ALBUM
SET FOR RELEASE APRIL 14 VIA HIS OWN HEADROOM-INC LABEL;

WORLDWIDE TOUR STARTS IN THE U.S.
APRIL 21 IN AGOURA HILLS, CA

February 9, 2017 -- RICHIE KOTZEN has never been an artist known for playing by the rules. And for this ever-adventurous triple-threat songwriter/guitarist/vocalist, that meant putting on the brakes after a nonstop flurry of band-related activity in order to refuel the creative process for the ten heartfelt and hard-hitting songs that comprise his new, vibrant 21st solo album, SALTING EARTH, out April 14 via his own custom label, Headroom-Inc.

KOTZEN tossed convention on its ear by actually taking one step back in order to move two steps forward.

“That song came to me in the oddest way at the most inconvenient time,” he reveals of the track that can be filed in the “first thought, best thought” category. One night when he was home alone, “I basically woke myself up with the chorus melody in my head, and in my haze, I knew that if I didn’t at least record the idea, it would be forever lost. I ended up programming a simple drum beat, and then recorded the acoustic guitar. The lyrics pretty much wrote themselves. By 6 in the morning, the song was finished. I was going to do more overdubs, but I kept playing it over and over, and I just felt like there was something so personal coming out of the speakers. By messing with it, I’d likely destroy the magic — so I left it as it is.”

Bringing SALTING EARTH live to the people is KOTZEN’s next holy mission. “My real outlet is touring — playing live as much as I can, wherever I can, whenever I can,” he says enthusiastically. “It’s one of the few things you can’t copy, steal, or download. It’s an engaging human experience that’s a give-and-take between both the performer and the audience, and there is nothing else like it on this earth.”

KOTZEN will launch his “Salting Earth Tour” on April 21 at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA. He and his band are planning to tour extensively throughout the U.S. and continue their journey into Mexico, South America, and Europe. A complete list of international tour dates will be posted on KOTZEN’s official website and social media pages.

RICHIE KOTZEN
FIRST-EVER PROFESSIONALLY FILMED DVD,
'RICHIE KOTZEN LIVE'
STREAMING NOW ON YOUTUBE

February 2, 2016 -- RICHIE KOTZEN released his first-ever professionally filmed DVD, RICHIE KOTZEN LIVE, October 13, 2015 via his Headroom-Inc label. He has now made it available for fans worldwide to stream on his official YouTube page.

As KOTZEN explains, 'I was thinking that there are so many fans around the world that simply don't have access to or can't afford to buy this content.  Not that I'm looking to give everything away, but I thought by making this available for people to watch on YouTube I was sort of giving back a bit to all the great people who have bought my music, concert tickets, and generally supported my pretty much 'underground' career over the last 20 years. Those who can afford or desire to own the full resolution DVD still have the option of buying it as well...and I hope they do as I've still got a few on-going bills to pay (laughing).'

KOTZEN and his band ended their 2014-2015 tour in Tokyo, Japan at Akasaka Blitz, where they shot the entire concert in high-definition.  This is RICHIE KOTZEN and his band'bassist Dylan Wilson and drummer Mike Bennett--at their best.   It features some of his classics, 'You Can't Save Me,' 'Remember,' as well as new songs 'Cannibals,' 'War Paint,' and 'Walk With Me.'  The collection also includes off-the-chart improvisational solo sections between KOTZEN and his virtuoso rhythm section.  This live DVD concert is a must-have for KOTZEN fans worldwide, and it's the perfect introduction to those who have yet to be a part of the RICHIE KOTZEN experience.

He currently plays guitar and fronts The Winery Dogs with bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Mike Portnoy (the band's latest HOT STREAK album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 'Top Current Alternative Albums' chart and #5 on Billboard's 'Top Current Hard Music' chart). The trio is on tour in Europe through the end of February.  U.S. tour dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

RICHIE KOTZEN 20th Solo Album ‘Cannibals’ Out Now

RICHIE KOTZEN 20th SOLO ALBUM, ‘CANNIBALS,’ OUT NOW

Guitarist/singer/songwriter RICHIE KOTZEN digitally released his 20th solo album, CANNIBALS, January 8 via his Headroom-Inc label.  It quickly reached #1 on Amazon’s New Rock Releases chart.  Videos for “You” and “Cannibals” can be found on his official YouTube page.

Here’s information about CANNIBALS, in KOTZEN’s own words:

CANNIBALS is an interesting record for me,” KOTZEN explains, “because much of this material is comprised from recordings that are as old as 10 years.  The title track is the most recent song I’ve written.  That was from 2014, but ‘Come On Free,’ for example, was originally recorded back in the early 2000’s.  I always liked the track, but never knew how to fit it into one of my records.  Somehow I thought now was the time, so I went back to the original recording and did a remix.  The only new overdub is the chant at the end, which happened recently one night when I was playing the song for my friends.  I had a bunch of friends in the studio from Brazil and they all started chanting.  I was like, ‘ALL THAT!’ and put up the microphone and we recorded it with no headphones.  Everyone was having a great time.  It was so spontaneous.

“The track ‘Time For The Payment’ is also an older recording from 2008.  I would have included that on my album, PEACE SIGN, back then, but it didn’t seem to make sense at the time.  That recording is unchanged.  I just had it mastered and I think it is a great closer for the record.

“‘In An Instant’ and ‘The Enemy’ were both written by combining new song ideas with previously recorded material.  I wrote ‘The Enemy’ chorus in 2014 when I originally recorded the song, but I didn’t like the verse I had written.  After spending a day listening to old song ideas, I found an older song of mine with a great verse idea and intro, and basically copied and pasted that recording into the current recording.  Then I sang everything over, made some creative edits, re-wrote some lyrics, and ended up with ‘The Enemy.’  I probably shouldn’t reveal this, but half the song has a drum and guitar performance from several years ago and the rest of the song is comprised of new recorded performances.  Crazy concept, but somehow it worked and I ended up with a recording that I’m very happy with.  I did the same trick with the song ‘In An Instant.’

“I suppose my proudest moment on CANNIBALS is the song I wrote with my daughter, August, called ‘You.’  I originally released this as a single/video at the end of 2014.  It was born from a piano idea she had written when she was 13 or 14 years old.  I found the original recording of her piano performance on my computer and wrote lyrics to it last summer.  Probably one of my favorite things I’ve ever recorded.

“I also did a duet with someone who I’ve always been a fan of, Dug Pinnik from Kings X.  I was at a house party and Dug was there, and we were talking about how we should do something together one day.  When I went back to the studio I was working on the song ‘I’m All In’ and then it hit me.  I called Dug and asked him if he would trade vocals with me on the tune and we did it!  He added a whole other dimension to the track.  I’m glad I called him!”

In other KOTZEN news, he’ll be teaming up with his bandmates of THE WINERY DOGS (Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan) to start working on their second album this month.  Stay tuned for new album details.

RICHIE KOTZEN RELEASES TWO NEW SONGS AHEAD OF NEW ALBUM SET FOR RELEASE IN 2015

December 8, 2014 --  Fans of guitarist/singer/songwriter RICHIE KOTZEN anxious to hear new music before his next solo album (details of which are forthcoming) should head over to iTunes, where he just released two new singles, 'You' and 'Cannibals.'

'You' was co-written by RICHIE's daughter, August, who appears in the video posted on RICHIE's official YouTube page.  He explains, 'It must have been four years ago and my daughter, who is now 17, was constantly playing this piece of music on the piano.  I finally asked her what it was and she said she just made it up.   I set up the microphones and recorded her playing for about seven minutes.  Years later, I found this on my hard drive and decided to write lyrics to it over this past summer.  The end result is what you see and hear in the video.   It is one of my favorite things I've done and I'm happy to have been able to collaborate on music with my daughter.'

'Cannibals' made its debut during his recent three-month solo tour, which started in Europe, taking him through Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, and Chile, and concluding with a month-long trek of the U.S.  'I did something I've never done before on this tour,' RICHIE explains, 'which is performing an original composition that has yet to be released.  The only place you could hear the song 'Cannibals' was at the show, and it went over quite well with the fans.  Rather than wait to release the song as part of the new album next year, I figured it would be cool to share the studio version now while it's fresh in the people's minds who attended my shows.  I was able to collect live footage that was shot during the tour and compile a live video to go along with the song.'  A newly released video can be found on his official YouTube page here.

RICHIE has been touring in support of THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN, which was released September 2 on Loud & Proud Records.  It's a two-CD and DVD career retrospective set that encompasses this iconic talent's entire career of his most essential work:  classic material; acoustic performances; bootleg material; and two brand new songs ('War Paint' and 'Walk With Me').  The DVD features music videos, acoustic performances, and bootleg material.

Stay tuned for new RICHIE KOTZEN album news in the coming weeks.

To celebrate his newest project, he's hitting the U.S. concert trail starting November 1 in Annapolis, MD at Rams Head Tavern.  Before then, he'll be spending September and most of October on a headlining tour which will take him through Europe and Mexico.

THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN is a two-CD and DVD career retrospective set that encompasses this iconic talent's entire career of his most essential work:  classic material; acoustic performances; bootleg material; and two brand new songs ('War Paint' and 'Walk With Me').  The DVD features music videos, acoustic performances, and bootleg material.  A new official video for 'War Paint' will premiere on MusicRadar.com later this week.  In the meantime, the video for 'Walk With Me' (filmed entirely on KOTZEN's iPhone) can be found on his official YouTube page.

Fans can check out exclusive full album streams of each disc on VH1 Classic/MTV.com and GuitarWorld.com.

KOTZEN personally curated THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN from his 18 solo albums in order to give listeners the most comprehensive, cohesive, and concise introduction to his extensive body of work.  'I've really changed and grown as an artist and as a person,' he says.  'I hand-selected songs so newcomers can get into my music and learn who I am as a recording artist.'

Rave reviews of THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN have already started to surface:

'KOTZEN is an artist with a centered musical philosophy anchored by soulful music and a perfectionist's attention to craft... THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN is an excellent career retrospective by an underrated songwriter.'  (Oscar Jordan, Vintage Guitar)

'The extensive combo perfectly captures his dynamic musicianship, his jaw-dropping guitar solos, and his tangy blend of rock, blues, and soul, and will encourage listeners to discover more of his work...'  (Bear Frazer, Arena.com)

'RICHIE KOTZEN is one on the most ridiculous guitar players alive today...If you have only heard RICHIE in other bands (or have no clue who he is) then you really need to hook yourself up and give him his due. RICHIE has an incredibly soulful voice and did I mention his guitar solos are other worldly?  Get the book of his musical life and discover some magic.'  (Jason Lally, Realrockreport.com)

RICHIE KOTZEN SET TO RELEASE 'THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN' 2 CD/1 DVD COLLECTION SEPTEMBER 2 ON LOUD & PROUD RECORDS

July 14, 2014 -- When RICHIE KOTZEN plays his guitar, you know it's him.  The guitar virtuoso, singer and songwriter possesses an inimitable style that's both instantly recognizable and immediately striking.  This unique style courses through THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN, a career retrospective collection set for release September 2 on Loud & Proud Records.  It encompasses this iconic talent's entire career of his most essential work and includes two CDs of classic material, acoustic performances, bootleg material and two brand new songs ('War Paint' and 'Walk With Me'), and a DVD of music videos, acoustic performances and bootleg material.  A three-song sampler, including the two new songs along with 'Lie To Me,' is being serviced to rock radio stations later this month.  Fans can pre-order the album at http://bit.ly/1oXRsUX.

KOTZEN personally curated THE ESSENTIAL RICHIE KOTZEN from his 18 solo albums in order to give listeners the most comprehensive, cohesive and concise introduction to his extensive body of work.  'I've really changed and grown as an artist and as a person,' he says.  'I hand-selected songs so newcomers can get into my music and learn who I am as a recording artist.'

'War Paint' builds from an opening bluesy riff into a bombastic chorus punctuated by KOTZEN's gravelly delivery and impeccable lead playing.  He explains, 'It was a challenge to make a studio recording sound like a live band with only one musician playing all the instruments.  I think I accomplished that on this track.'  At the same time, 'Walk With Me' sees KOTZEN evolving once more and incorporating a Theremin, an antique electronic instrument, into an emotive and engaging anthem.  'There was a specific sound I was hearing in the song,' he reveals.  'I realized it was a Theremin, so I bought one.  I spent a couple of weeks learning it.  I used that where the lead guitar would normally go.  It was a really rewarding departure for me.'

With his guitar styles ranging from rock, blues, jazz and fusion to pop and soul, RICHIE KOTZEN has built a remarkably diverse 20 year career as a guitarist, singer and songwriter.  During that span, KOTZEN toured with his trio extensively outside the United States, building a loyal fan base and selling out shows throughout Europe, Latin America, and Japan.  In 1996, Fender guitars honored him with not one, but two signature model guitars.  His signature model Telecaster is available worldwide and continues to be a top seller for the brand.  In 2006, KOTZEN received one of his biggest personal honors when The Rolling Stones chose him to open up a string of Japanese shows placing him in front of some of his biggest crowds to date.  He has not only built an incredibly successful solo career, but has also found himself writing, recording and playing live with a variety of different artists, including Jazz legends Stanley Clarke and Lenny White.  He currently plays guitar and fronts the band The Winery Dogs with bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Mike Portnoy (the band's self-titled debut album debuted at #27 on the Billboard 'Top 200 Albums' chart).

With his 20
th full-length solo album on the horizon for 2015 as well as countless gigs, RICHIE KOTZEN's legacy is only continuing to expand.  'When you perform, record or write, you go to a different place,' he concludes.  'It's another world. I love hearing people react to the music and lyrics.  That's the ultimate reward.'

Stay tuned for solo touring news, which will be announced in the coming weeks.
