6CD/DVD Collection Includes A Newly Remastered Version Of The Top 10 Album, Expanded With Unreleased Studio Recordings, The Band’s 1990 Headlining Set At Castle Donington, Music Videos And A New Interview With David Coverdale

Four Different Versions Will Be Available From Rhino On October 4

LOS ANGELES – Whitesnake scored the band’s third consecutive platinum record with its eighth studio album, Slip of the Tongue. Originally released in November 1989, it peaked at number 10 on the U.K. and U.S. album charts thanks largely to its two Top 40 hits – “Fool For Your Loving” and “The Deeper The Love.” The fan favorite turns 30 this year and Rhino is celebrating with several new versions, including a colossal seven-disc boxed set.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available on October 4 for $74.98. The 6CD/DVD collection includes a newly remastered version of the album, plus unreleased studio recordings, audio and video of the band’s performance at the 1990 Monsters of Rock festival, and a new interview with Whitesnake founder and lead singer, David Coverdale. It comes in a 60-page hardbound book filled with rare memorabilia from the era.  For a limited time, Rhino.com will offer the Super Deluxe edition paired with a lithograph signed by David Coverdale for $84.98.

Other versions of Slip of the Tongue will also be available the same day, including double-CD Deluxe Edition, which includes the newly remastered album expanded with a selection of rare and unreleased bonus tracks ($24.98) and a double-LP Deluxe Edition, which features the newly remastered album along with a selection of unique bonus tracks ($31.98).  A single-disc version ($9.98) includes the newly remastered album, along with single B-Sides plus alternate recordings. The music will be available digitally as well.

Following the 8x platinum success of their eponymous album in 1987, Whitesnake returned two years later with Slip of the Tongue. At the time, the band included Coverdale, bassist Rudy Sarzo, drummer Tommy Aldridge, and guitarists Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai. Vandenberg and Coverdale co-wrote all but one song on the album, but Vandenberg couldn’t record them in the studio at the time due to a hand injury. To fill the void, Vai joined the band for the album and tour.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION features unreleased versions of every album track, as well as monitor mixes for the album recorded in 1989. In addition, the collection includes nearly two dozen previously unreleased tracks taken from the session tapes that highlight working versions of album tracks and more. The set also includes the CD debut of Slip of the Tongue: The Wagging Tongue Edition. Released exclusively on vinyl in 1989, it features Coverdale being interviewed about each track followed by the song.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION finishes big with Whitesnake’s 1990 headlining performance at the Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington on CD and DVD. The DVD also includes three music videos, all of which have been carefully restored and remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound for the first time ever. A new promo video for the track “Sweet Lady Luck”, made exclusively for this set, a behind the scenes look at the making of the album, plus a newly recorded interview with Coverdale and Vandenberg rounds out the DVD.

The Snake is back! David Coverdale and his band of interchangeable merry men return after a production delay and a question mark over just how long Whitesnake Inc. can continue in light of a decreased vocal ability from the Governor.

Continuing their journey on the snaketrain is duelling guitarists Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra, with Reb delivering a bigger hand in the album’s inner workings and Joel getting his first chance to work on new material after joining before The Purple Album.

So what to make of this latest addition to the Whitesnake catalogue? Flesh And Blood may not be a very original title and the artwork looks like a 5 minute photoshop re-arrangement of the band’s 1994 ‘Greatest Hits’ cover, but inside is a more appealing discovery.

The band sounds energised and firing on all cylinders. David Coverdale’s vocals are managed as well as possible throughout the album, but they are heavily processed and a long way from his peak as one of the world’s best rock vocalists. Thankfully he still carries the same attitude and presence as he always has, making it hard to fault the performance overall.

Flesh And Blood sounds like a hybrid of Good To Be Bad, Slip Of The Tongue and maybe a little Slide It In. Plus it has its own little personality too.

The album gets off to a rollicking start with the 4x hard rock bombardment of Good To See You Again, Gonna Be Alright, the commercial friendly single Shut Up & Kiss Me and the cheesy Hey You (You Make Me Rock), which should give a writers credit to Dann Huff for its borrowing from Giant’s Lay It On The Line.
Quality pauses for two songs that just annoy me - the mid-tempo romp of Always & Forever (annoying chorus hook) and the ballad When I Think Of You (annoying chorus and lead guitar hook).

We’re back into the rollicking for the stampeding Trouble Is Your Middle Name and Flesh & Blood.
Well I Never has another very average chorus I could easily skip, but the near 7 minute moody Heart Of Stone is perfect.
Get Up brings memories of Coverdale/Page’s Feeling Hot, while the sweet acoustic After All has a Sailing Ships vibe to it.
Closing the album is the pretty average 6 minute Zeppelinesque rocker Sands Of Time.

At 13 tracks and 59 minutes, the album is too long. I could happily cut 3 of those tunes easily as there’s 4 fillers here. I would also note that I don’t like the sequencing either. I’d opt for an entirely different running order for a smoother flow.
But the majority of the album is still classic Whitesnake and thoroughly enjoyable, so for that reason I’m happy to rate this pretty highly, knowing that I can creature a CDR or playlist with a few less songs and my own preferred running order.

The Snake is alive!

Whitesnake - "Shut Up & Kiss Me" (Official Music Video - Jaguar Edit)

Fresh off celebrating their 40th anniversary, rock legends Whitesnake return with their latest studio album, “Flesh & Blood”. This album follows the 2011 critically acclaimed studio album “Forevermore” and 2015’s “The Purple Album”, a reimagining of Deep Purple classics from Whitesnake mastermind’s David Coverdale’s time in that band. The 13 original, visceral tracks on “Flesh & Blood”, the band’s 13th studio album, are, luckily for you dear reader, “all killer, no filler”, as the saying goes.

But would you expect anything less from the ’Snakes?

David Coverdale, the mastermind behind Whitesnake & co-composer of 'Shut Up & Kiss Me' with guitarist Reb Beach, commenting on the forthcoming release said "that after the intense darkness of our last video BURN If anything, it’s ‘light’ snake, you know? We’ve got some really dark energy going on in the world right now, so we’re gonna write & record a fun, knees up, song about falling in love with a fabulous babe. You’re over-talking, over-compensating & she just looks at you, takes the reins  & says, 'Shut Up and Kiss Me!' and that’s it!! My video director and creative partner Tyler Bourns and I discussed a great storyline for the video, which involves a surprise guest: my fabulous old white Jaguar. We ended up cleaning and detailing it, as it has been in storage since I moved to Lake Tahoe, then we dusted off my old turquoise silk jacket from the original ‘Here I Go Again’ video and I was thinking, "man, this is going to be fun!" It’s a respectful acknowledgment and positive nod to the past, just fun stuff.”

Joining Coverdale on Flesh & Blood is the powerhouse band comprised of Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra on guitar, Michael Devin on bass, Tommy Aldridge on drums, and Michele Luppi on keyboards.

The current incarnation of the band carries on the long and unwavering tradition of main man David Coverdale being surrounded by cream of the crop players who go all in to bring fans the best hard rock humanly possible. 40+ years into their existence, the ‘Snakes fangs have only grown sharper and are ready to inject fans with more of that rock ‘n roll venom they crave.

JOEL HOEKSTRA Posts Whitesnake Update

Artist:

WHITESNAKE guitarist JOEL HIEKSTRA has posted an update on MelodicRock’s own Noticeboard regarding the delayed Whitesnake album.

It reads: “Hi all! There were technical issues with the studio during mixing(first the board, then the computer). It set them/us back a bit. Factor in the 4 months it takes for the label to manufacture vinyl after turning it in and the fact that you want to coordinate a release with a tour and you've got an early '19 release. Unfortunate, but it is what it is. It has nothing to do with the label, the songs, DC's voice, problems with the band. It is, as stated, pushed back due to technical issues. Apologies and hope everyone here has a great day today with nothing but great days to follow. Rock on!!

4CD/DVD Collection Includes A Newly Remastered Version Of The Original Album, Plus Unreleased Live and Studio Recordings, Music Videos, And Documentary; Several Versions Will Be Available On October 6 From Parlophone

New Whitesnake Deal With Rhino Entertainment Puts Significant Catalogue
With Warner Music Group Worldwide For The First Time

Whitesnake had already released a string of Top 10 albums in the UK, Europe & Japan before the band conquered the entire world with its “1987” record, which was certified multi-platinum and featured the smash single “Here I Go Again.” The classic album turns 30 this year and Parlophone is celebrating with four new versions, including an expansive boxed set.

WHITESNAKE “1987”: SUPER DELUXE EDITION will be available on October 6. The 4-CD/DVD collection includes the original album with newly remastered sound, unreleased live and studio recordings, classic music videos, concert footage, a 30 minute documentary, featuring a new interview with David Coverdale, Whitesnake’s founder and lead singer. The music comes in a 60-page hardbound book that’s filled with rare and unseen photos from the era, an extended essay based on new interviews with Coverdale, plus a booklet of the album’s lyrics, handwritten by Coverdale. The audio will also be available via digital download and streaming services.

Three other versions of WHITESNAKE “1987” will also be available the same day. A Deluxe Edition will be available in both 2-CD and 2-LP versions, each including the newly remastered album expanded with a selection of unreleased bonus recordings. A single-disc version of the newly remastered album will also be available.

This also marks the first release under a newly signed catalogue deal with Whitesnake and Rhino Entertainment, the catalogue division of Warner Music Group. This new deal includes both the North American and Japanese rights, marking the first time a substantial amount of the Whitesnake catalogue will reside under Warner Music Group worldwide.

“It gives me great joy to finally have so much of my Whitesnake catalogue all under the same roof with the Warner family and I’m thrilled to be now working with this tremendous team on a worldwide basis,” says Coverdale. “I have great memories of being with Warner back in my days with Deep Purple, then when I was with Geffen, when they were distributed by Warner, so it feels like coming home to now have Whitesnake there. This elaborate reissue is the perfect project to kick off the new relationship.”

“Whitesnake is one of the all-time great rock ‘n’ roll bands, with David being an absolute icon as a vocalist and front man,” says Rhino President Mark Pinkus. “We are absolutely thrilled to now have so much of the Whitesnake catalogue with Warner on a global basis and are excited for the fans to see what great releases we have planned for the coming years.”

Soon after its release in April 1987, WHITESNAKE “1987” became a huge success around the world, selling more than multi million copies. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard album chart and spawned four popular singles: “Still Of The Night,” “Give Me All Your Love,” “Is This Love” (which reached #2) and the #1 hit “Here I Go Again.”

WHITESNAKE “1987”: SUPER DELUXE EDITION comes with an entire disc of unreleased live performances featuring Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell & Tommy Aldridge recorded during the band’s 1987-88 tour. The music includes live versions of several tracks from “1987”, plus Whitesnake classics “Slide It In,” “Love Ain’t No Stranger,” and “Slow An’ Easy.”

An additional disc spotlights the creative process behind WHITESNAKE “1987” with a selection of 11 unreleased demo and rehearsal recordings, including early versions of nearly every song on the album called 87 Evolutions. The final disc introduces newly remixed versions the album’s four singles, and includes rare radio mixes, as well as songs from 87 Versions, an EP released exclusively in Japan.

The DVD from WHITESNAKE “1987”: SUPER DELUXE EDITION includes music videos for the four singles, all of which have been carefully restored and remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound for the first time ever. In addition, the DVD also features a new 30 minute documentary about the making of WHITESNAKE “1987”, a new promo video made especially for this set of the 1988 version of “Here I Go Again” and unreleased live footage from the 1987-88 tour.

After a quiet couple of years, Whitesnake's David Coverdale is "feeling like a fireman surrounded by little wildfires, just really, really busy" with upcoming releases both new and archival thanks to a new deal with the Warner Music Group Worldwide and Rhino Entertainment.

First up in the deal -- which puts a large chunk of Whitesnake's catalog under one roof for the first time ever -- is 30th anniversary editions of 1987's eight-times-platinum Whitesnake album on Oct. 6, with different configurations featuring unreleased studio, live and video material. (Check out a previously unreleased concert version of "Still Of The Night," from the Live On Tour 1987-88 disc of the reissue, premiering exclusively below.) Record Store Black Friday on Nov. 24 will see a home video as well as a coffee table book chronicling The Purple Album cycle from 2015, while the new year will bring a new Whitesnake studio album and world tour.

"The next three to five years is spoken for with some really exciting projects," Coverdale tells Billboard. He's also pleased to be back with what he calls "corporate music" after a decade with independents -- and particularly back with Warner, where he began his recording career with Deep Purple during the mid-70s and where Whitesnake made its most successful albums for Geffen Records.

"The cool expression was they wanted new Coverdale as well as the old, which means new product," Coverdale notes. He was won over by Rhino President Mark Pinkus coming to visit the singer at his home in Lake Tahoe during the winter, braving massive snowdrifts and a three-hour drive from the airport to have lunch and seal the deal. "We discussed all the projects that were going on and he said, 'Well, I'm totally in if you are,' and then drove back to the airport and flew back (to Los Angeles)," Coverdale remembers. "It was the most heroic record company executive scenario I've ever experienced. So it was relatively effortless to work together."

"It's really thrilling for Warner to now have the Whitesnake catalog for the entire world and to be able to work closely with David on some amazing projects that will continue the legacy of one of the all-time-great rock n’ roll bands," Pinkus says. "Our vision on how to approach the catalog for the future were incredibly aligned. While I can't go into too much detail, we plan to give the 'Rhino treatment' to the Whitesnake catalog with a wide variety of offerings for all types of consumers, from boxed sets to vinyl to download to streaming."

The Whitesnake album, which turned 30 in April, is the appropriate debut project under the new deal. The set launched the hit singles (and accompanying videos) "Here I Go Again" (Billboard Hot 100 No. 1), "Is This Love" (No. 2), "Give Me All Your Love" (No. 48) and "Still Of the Night" (No. 79) and the new editions -- a four-CD/DVD Super Deluxe Edition and a two-disc Deluxe Edition -- will feature plenty of bonuses, including some of Coverdale's demos with guitarist John Sykes.

"It was a lot of fun to do," Coverdale says of the reissue, "because I don't go back a lot. I kind of learn from the past to apply those lessons to the future and the present. But my gratitude for (the album) is beyond words. I've only ever gone into a studio to try to improve on the last record...There was no, 'Right, I'm gonna sell 30-odd million fucking records!' It was amazing, just amazing, so it's great to revisit all of this."

More archival reissues are planned for the future, while Coverdale and his main Whitesnake mates, guitarists Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra, have been convening for regular writing sessions towards an anticipated late spring of 2018 release -- Whitesnake's first set of original material since 2011's Forevermore. "I'm actually very excited about it because it's the first opportunity both Reb and Joel and I have actually had to sit down and write together," Coverdale says. "There's a lot of what one would refer to as arena rock; Reb and I were talking the other night over dinner and he said, 'Man, there's so many songs here that no matter where we play -- Portugal or Brazil or Tokyo -- they're gonna get this hook. They're gonna be punching the fuckin' air and have a great night.' And I went, 'Oh, absolutely  -- and more than usual,' which is great. I can't do throwaway shit. The only reason I'm doing this record are the songs are gonna be a great Whitesnake album for Whitesnake fans -- and the band. It's very exciting."

DAVID COVERDALE Reveals Health Scare, Mounting Debt Leading To WHITESNAKE '87 Global Smash

IN THE STUDIO with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 30th anniversary of one of the best-selling hard rock albums in history, Whitesnake ’87.

After eight studio albums in 10 years Whitesnake had managed to keep hard rock relevant, in an ever-changing ‘80s rock market in the UK, while America had yet to fully embrace the band. Bandleader, singer, songwriter  David Coverdale was sidelined with a potentially career-ending chronic sinus infection midway through this project.  Coverdale reveals to IN THE STUDIO  producer and host Redbeard just how serious his health scare was.

“He (the doctor) put a small flashlight into my mouth... and said, ‘This is the worst sinus infection I’ve ever seen, I’m surprised you could even talk’.  I came back and prepared for surgery and a 50% chance I would never be able to perform again.” - David Coverdale
Three million dollars in debt and having just recovered from throat surgery, Coverdale put it all on the line.

“We shot three videos in two weeks, “Still of the Night”, “Here I Go Again”, “Is This Love” and things just went nuts.” - David Coverdale

WHITESNAKE @ 30/ IN THE STUDIO interview program is available now to STREAM at: "http://www.inthestudio.net/online-on-demand/whitesnake-87-david-coverdale/"

Whitesnake return with their latest lineup (adding the fresh blood of Joel Hoekstra on guitar and the return of old ‘Snake Tommy Aldridge on drums) for this new album of classic Deep Purple material.
But not any old Purple tunes – the classic songs of the David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Richie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice lineup, known infamously as the Mk. III and IV lineups. Mk IV was the one album Come Taste The Band featuring Tommy Bolin in place of Blackmore.

Fans seem split into two very distinct camps on this one. There’s the older fans who grew up with Deep Purple who are calling for Sir Coverdale’s head for committing the sacrilege of taking on these tunes; then there are the newer, generally younger fans that are not as familiar with the legacy of the Purple ones and don’t have the same reverent ownership or knowledge of these 70s classics.
Me? At the risk of getting splinters in my ass, I’ve got one foot in both camps. I love Deep Purple. There’s simply no band like them and they remain one of the founding artists of this whole genre.
If one loves the history of rock music, you can’t help but to have discovered Deep Purple somewhere along the path. And I also love Whitesnake. Even more so. I’m of the age that I grew up with the 80s Snake. Slide It In, the monumental 1987 and those records that followed.

So with my fanboy credentials for both aspects of this release established and my admiration of current guitarists Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra, it’s onto the music at hand.
First of all – the production is huge. Loud, big, rocked up into a more obvious Whitesnake guitar driven feel over the more guitar groove/Hammond organ sound of the originals.
Hoekstra and Beach play all over this record, adding new solos in a couple of parts and their own take on the dynamics of what Deep Purple would sound like under a duel guitar attack.

The biggest issue and perhaps the one that many are tiptoeing around is the vocal capacity of Mr. David Coverdale – Lord of the Snake and truly one of the finest vocalists in rock history.
His dulcet tones are still unrivalled. That deep, sultry voice is every bit as enticing as ever.
The same can’t be said of his higher range and the trademark Coverdale scream. Both have weakened considerably over the years, but fair play to David for doing a still commendable job at the grand age of 63. Yes, 60-bloomin-3!!! I can’t envision half the people of this world doing what David does at age 30, let alone 63.
So the vocals are hit and miss on occasion, but that’s not getting in my way of enjoying this album.

Burn simply rips your ears to shreds. As it should. Heavier than the original (as are all tracks on the album), the Snake version covers the same ground as recent rocked up versions by Glenn Hughes. It remains one of the greatest hard rock songs ever.
You Fool No One and Sail Away are silky smooth; while The Gypsy keeps one foot on the brake before Lady Double Dealer sees the pedal to the metal.
A seven minute Mistreated is as epic as is required while the fabulous Holy Man retains much of the original’s spirit.
On the downside, Might Just Take Your Life drags a little while You Keep On Moving fails in comparison to the Glenn Hughes versions.
The Joel Hoekstra constructed acoustic guitar delight of Soldier Of Fortune is much better as is the authentic 70s groove of Lay Down Stay Down.

The controversial Stormbringer closes the album with a raucous flurry of guitars and rhythm, but the vocals are so far back in the mix, they are almost washed out. I can see why purists were up in arms over this one and there’s far better within the album.

The Purple Album is a long record. It took me a few listens to better appreciate it and some songs were more instant than others, but if you are going to do a tribute album, you may as well do it well.
Not everyone is going to appreciate this album, but it is by no means as bad as some have made it out to be. I’m sure we’d all prefer an all-new studio album, but this will keep many fans happy while we wait.
