Aerosmith Rocks 40th Anniversary - The Band Recall Successes And Excesses

Dallas, TX - June 8, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands celebrate the 40th anniversary of Aerosmith’s bold musical statement Rocks.

By the end of 1975 Aerosmith had sold three million copies of their breakthrough third album Toys In The Attic. Against all conventional wisdom their manager had convinced their record company to re-release a song from Aerosmith’s very first album called “Dream On” for the third time, even though it had failed twice before. This time “Dream On” goes to # 6 on the Billboard chart a full five years after it had been released. It was under this head of steam that Aerosmith’s next album Rocks was written and recorded for release in May 1976.

Aerosmith Rocks was not so much a simple album title as it was a definitive declaration of intent. Joe Perry reflects on the legacy of Aerosmith, America’s premiere hard rock band, with InTheStudio host Redbeard.

“The greatest strength of the band is our ability to play live. This (Rocks album) is basically a live record... It’s what you would have heard if you were standing in the middle of the room when we recorded.  - Joe Perry

It was during this mid-‘70s “make it and spend it” period of sex, drugs and rock and roll that Perry and lead singer Steven Tyler earned the notorious nickname “The Toxic Twins”, choices which soon proved to be very costly for all the members of Aerosmith. Guitarist Brad Whitford can never forget.

“When I saw the movie about Syd Vicious and when I saw the movie Spinal Tap, everybody sat in theaters laughing... And I watch those movies and said, ‘Part of that is my life, FOR REAL! ‘... I live with painful memories. I refuse to forget. A knot in my stomach and dreadful fear for someone... Some really bad times this band went through with drugs and alcohol, which almost took this band and a whole lot of other things away.”  - Brad Whitford

BOB SEGER Takes Aim On Dream 40 Years Ago With 'Live Bullet'

Dallas, TX - May 26, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands puts the crosshairs on the pivotal live album by Detroit journeyman rocker Bob Seger, who took aim on a dream and squeezed the trigger. With sales to date of over six million copies, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band’s April 1976 double live album Live Bullet may be the biggest-selling album in history to have missed the Top 30 initially. Live Bullet sales took off after Bob Seger’s breakthrough Night Moves, his tenth album, skyrocketed later that same year.

1968’s “Ramblin‘ Gamblin‘ Man” hit single had been the “bullet” in the chamber, but during the ensuing seven years Seger added a clip full of songs including “Beautiful Loser”,” the rapid-fire rocker “Katmandu”, and the secret weapon “Turn the Page”. As Bob explains to InTheStudio host Redbeard, playing with live ammo those next several years was challenging to prove that Seger was not firing blanks .

“ After “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” did rather well, the next seven years or so were a little dry, and I’ve always called those years, ‘Bob learns to make albums’, because that’s a whole different thing than making a hit single. I had to develop my writing because I was on the road constantly, where I really didn’t have much of a chance to write. We were doing like 250 nights a year... At some point I said to myself, ‘I really enjoy doing this. I really don’t want to have a what musicians call a ‘day gig’.”  - Bob Seger

The Cars Share Best In Show Honors Ric Ocasek, Greg Hawkes Guest On InTheStudio

Dallas, TX - MAY 17, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands puts out the checkered flag for some of the best of The Cars with singer/songwriter/guitarist Ric Ocasek behind the wheel and keyboardist Greg Hawkes riding shotgun.

The Cars’ zero-to-platinum popularity came amidst the final fizzle of the mid-Seventies Punk Rock sparkler, and the sound and attitude that survived was labeled by at least one rock writer as the nebulous one-size-fits-none term New Wave.

The drivetrain of the five man Boston band was always powered by the songs of Ric Ocasek. Growing up in the Otcasek household (Ric(k) later would also drop the “t” from his surname), early 1960s Sputnik paranoia and Telstar technology mixed with Cold War James Bond spy intrigue for Ric, courtesy of his father. “He was a systems analyst for NASA”, remarks Ocasek to InTheStudio host Redbeard. “There were ‘black boxes’ around our house that were locked. People from the government used to come and interview my Mom and ask her if he talked in his sleep!”

The Cars test track where they tuned up their sound was the mid-Seventies Boston club scene. With the follow up to their surprise hit debut (#16 on Rolling Stone magazine's Top 100 Debut Albums of All Time), the torque of The Cars' "Let's Go", "Touch and Go", "Shake It Up", "You Might Think" and monster ballad "Drive" all propelled the cross-legged Woodstock generation off of their butts and back onto the dance floor. The sleek polished chrome and glass production combined distinctive instrumental touches from rock and roll's past in a way that, paradoxically, sounded cutting edge modern, with ten Top 30 hits and twenty-five million albums sold just in the US.

OZZY OSBOURNE Storms America With Blizzard of Ozz 35 Years Ago

Dallas, TX - March 15, 2016. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands  hosts Ozzy Osbourne on the 35th anniversary of his best-selling solo debut Blizzard of Ozz.

Having been fired by Britain's heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath, by 1980 Ozzy Osbourne was, for all practical purposes, washed up. Ozzy found himself with low self esteem and a raging drug and alcohol problem. If not for the heroic actions of his then-manager and future wife Sharon Arden, Ozzy would never have been offered the chance to clean up his act and hold auditions for a new band, where he discovered a diminutive 25-year old guitarist, Randy Rhoads, who inspired Osbourne.

After waiting nearly six months for Blizzard of Ozz to be released in the US, Ozzy's 'Crazy Train' nearly derailed his solo career with two of the most notorious incidents ever in rock history, including a shocking stunt in a record company conference room involving a live dove. Ozzy explains to InTheStudio host Redbeard what happened.

'So Sharon (manager) says to me 'We've got to make an impression.' She says, 'I want you to go into the board room, take these two doves, and throw them up in the air as a peace offering.' So, I drank a bottle of booze in the morning and said, 'I'll make an impression.'  - Ozzy Osbourne.

Nevertheless Osbourne would end up selling over four million copies in the US alone while helping to define the '80s pop-metal movement with classics 'Crazy Train', 'Mr. Crowley', 'I Don't Know' , and 'Suicide Solution'.  Additionally in this interview, Ozzy makes a passionate plea for anyone struggling with substance abuse to seek free help.

OZZY OSBOURNE In The Studio: Black Sabbath's Beginning To The End

Dallas, TX - January 21, 2016.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands  fires up the blast furnace with a fascinating interview with co-founder, singer/lyricist Ozzy Osbourne, for the 45th anniversary of Black Sabbath's heavy metal genre-defining second album, Paranoid.

The world into which the Birmingham England band Black Sabbath quickly rose to popularity in late 1970 felt increasingly like a dangerous place. Political assassinations, bombings, race riots, the Kent State College campus slaughter, and the decade-long Viet Nam war all brought Sabbath's dark haunting world vision and bludgeoning hard rock into focus.

But the beginning of Sabbath was something quite different. Ozzy Osbourne shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard the fond memories  of those days when he and his mates from the working-class neighborhood of Aston decided to ditch their trendy blues music, cut the band down from a 6-piece to a four, and started doing what Ozzy characterizes as 'spooky music'.

'I took the album home. My mum and pops have got one of these great big radiograms... I put the record on, and my father turned around to me and said, 'Son, I'm going to ask you a question and you've got to be honest to me.'  I said yeah. 'Are you sure you're just drinking alcohol?'  I said yeah, why, what's the matter? He said, ' This is very odd music. This is not music. This is weird.' '   - Ozzy Osbourne

Rock Legend David Bowie Remembered In Candid Interviews With Syndicated Radio Host Redbeard

'Nothing in our lives lasts. Nothing manifest lasts, except our spirit.' - David Bowie

Dallas, TX -  January 12, 2016.  Veteran rock journalist and InTheStudio syndicated radio host Redbeard shares candid interviews with music, film, art, and fashion great David Bowie, who died Sunday after an eighteen month battle with cancer.

In celebration of Bowie's recently released box set Five Years (1969 -1973), InTheStudio syndicated radio host Redbeard revisited interviews he conducted with Bowie about that highly prolific period in his career, spanning from Space Oddity to the invention of the cosmic character Ziggy Stardust.  These interviews can now be streamed on the InTheStudio syndicated radio show website at the links below:

DAVID BOWIE Interviews

Part Two
'http://www.inthestudio.net/online-only-interviews/david-bowie-1969-1973-part-2/'

'Bowie changed the trajectory of rock music, fashion, and gender social issues in thirty-eight minutes with Ziggy Stardust,' cites Redbeard. 'David Bowie is one of my most memorable interview subjects. 'Art with a capital 'A' ' is how Bowie described to me the expression of certain universal truths to one another. But even before he got sick, David seemed to realize fully that when the unique spirit within us all is set free to return to the ultimate Creator, there will be no need whatsoever of any kind of artistic expression, because art in Eternity will be replaced with Truth... with a capital 'T'.'

David Bowie in his own words from interviews conducted by Redbeard for InTheStudio:

'When I was nine or ten I was given books on Jack Kerouac, ( Lawrence) Ferlinghetti, (Alan) Ginsberg, (Gregory) Corso and all that whole Beat crowd, and they sort of became early Bibles to me'Initially I thought I was going to be a painter, but I realized there was absolutely no money in that. So for work I became a graphic artist'I enjoyed  theatrical music. I enjoyed the idea of interpreting things on stage and creating an otherness of some kind.'

'I think the person I was listening to out of America as much as Little Richard, at that time, would have been Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. This is really cool (Velvet Underground). I want to sound like this, but English.'

'Hunky Dory probably, for me, was the first recognition that I had this ability to write stories that people found interesting. There were no real characters on Hunky Dory, but the idea of developing little story songs,  as opposed to just mood pieces, it obviously was quite strong in me, and I think it gave me the motivation to propel myself towards something more cohesive as an album.'

'I had this terror, in my mind, that I was going to be trapped with Ziggy & the Spiders.'

'I think the Seventies showed conclusively that we live on a thread of rationality, that in fact the cosmos is far more complex than we realize.'

SANTANA Spiritualizes RockNRoll On 1970 'Abraxas' Album

Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, Michael Shrieve Share Story

Dallas, TX - Nov 3, 2015. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind Historys Greatest Rock Bands  celebrates one of the boldest, most successful, enduring and influential American albums, 1970s Abraxas by Santana.

The original Santana was one of the last bands to emerge from the late Sixties San Francisco music scene, introduced by a lights-out performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival documented on film for the world to see. Until then no Artist had successfully infused the sounds of Blues, Salsa and Jazz into Rock, but Santanas second album Abraxas would embody all of it, spending six consecutive weeks atop the US album charts, selling millions and being lauded as Album of the Year by several publications.

Band leader Carlos Santanas distinctive guitar sound became instantly recognizable to fans and iconic in modern music to this day. His passion for music, his belief in its power and its magic, transcends both cultural differences and musical categories.  But for Carlos Santana, making music has never been about chart position or record sales. For Carlos, music is almost a spiritual quest, an expression of feelings too profound and intense for words. Playing music, says Carlos, is like having a ministry.

Carlos Santana elaborates on that thought with InTheStudio host Redbeard.

I think about planting certain sounds, certain cries, not whining, but certain cries, certain things in their hearts (concert goers). When you leave them... they say, Man you guys left me pregnant with the sound. Even when you unplugged the amplifiers and the trucks roll away, its still in me.    - Carlos Santana

Don Henley Unleashes A Monster 30 Years Ago

Dallas, TX - Oct 21, 2014.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Albums  hosts Don Henley and songwriter/ producer Danny Kortchmar for a look at the Grammy Award-winning 1984 album Building The Perfect Beast.

'Dirty Laundry'
from Don Henley's first solo album I Can't Stand Still was but a mere appetizer to Henley's second post-Eagles effort Building The Perfect Beast. A monster of a success, BTPB contained the hit singles 'All She Wants To Do Is Dance',  'Sunset Grill', 'Driving With Your Eyes Closed', 'Not Enough Love In The World' and the Eighties anthem 'The Boys of Summer'.

Don Henley's solo career was validated when BTPB would go on to sell over four million albums and garner Henley's first solo Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance on 'The Boys of Summer'.  The accolades aside, Henley nevertheless admits to InTheStudio host Redbeard how he struggles to this day to understand the process of composing.

'The process of songwriting is still a mystery to me. I still don't know how we get from the beginning to the end of it. It just happens. I still can't quite explain it and I'm surprised, sometimes, that some of this stuff comes out of me.'

Highway To Hell  35th Anniversary Bittersweet for AC/DC's Angus and Malcolm Young InTheStudio

Dallas, TX - August 26, 2014.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 35th anniversary of Highway to Hell, the breakthrough album and bittersweet end of the Bon Scott era for AC/DC.

In August 1979 a lot of North American rock music fans had no idea that Highway to Hell  was the Australian-based AC/DC's fifth studio album, and that their long-suffering U.S. record label was getting frustrated by the band's lack of sales.

Short on money but with a full tank of steely determination, armed with a demo tape containing Highway to Hell , the band found and secured a young South African producer named 'Mutt' Lange. Lead guitarist Angus Young recounts to InTheStudio host Redbeard:

'We actually had written most of the songs in a weekend for Highway to Hell... We snuck in the rehearsal studio...we put a tape together and sent it to Mutt Lange and he said, 'Look, I hear what you're trying to do. I'm sure I can do you a great job'.'

The result was a rock masterpiece complete with the title track 'Highway to Hell', 'Girl's Got Rhythm', 'Shot Down In Flames', 'If You Want Blood'  which all to quickly became rock classics. But as rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young recalls, tragically, colorful lead singer Bon Scott would only get to enjoy the worldwide success of Highway to Hell  (certified seven million sold in the US) for another eight short months.

'Bon was unlucky, he just happened to fall asleep with his head in the wrong position from a big night of drinking... Bon wasn't a rockstar like Jim Morrison. Bon was a rock and roller. He lived that lifestyle, he didn't act that lifestyle.'

ALICE COOPER All-American Boy Exposed InTheStudio

Alice Cooper, All-American Boy Exposed InTheStudio

Dallas, TX - July 15, 2014.  North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio with Redbeard: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands presents a tutorial on why little boys shouldn't play with meat cleavers, nooses, high voltage, snakes, and Mommy's make-up and fishnet stockings'unless you plan on going into show business as the King of Shock Rock, Alice Cooper!

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper is on the road and on the big screen this summer, touring with his rock progeny Motley Crue (just one of the hundreds which Cooper inspired), and featured in a new documentary film/dvd titled Super Duper Alice Cooper, so the time seems right for Alice's brand of wrong for InTheStudio.

The band Alice Cooper made notorious headlines but few fans when they first appeared on the radio in 1971 with Love It to Death. Alice's stage act then was confrontational, even horrifying, and without the campy humor that would inform the act just two years later on Billion Dollar Babies

But what made Alice Cooper a household name was the savvy string of hits, indelibly changing the rock concert world while revolutionizing American Top 40 radio at the same time with 'I'm Eighteen', 'Under My Wheels', 'Be My Lover', 'School's Out', 'Elected', 'No More Mister Nice Guy', 'Welcome to My Nightmare' and 'Only Women Bleed' from five Top 10-selling albums.

The career ride for Alice Cooper careened from the whole band sleeping in one motel room to the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines; from fairways to national airwaves; from rehab to Rock Hall in 2011.  Alice reflects with InTheStudio host Redbeard on why Alice Cooper connected then, and lives on today.

' I think it was because we were such a shock to the nation, image-wise. We were the band that drove the stake through the heart of the Love Generation. Everything that the hippies didn't believe in. For the first time in a long time music was not political, it was fun! Alice Cooper was like the biggest juvenile delinquent Rock and Roll horror show of all time. But not only the image was there, the most important thing in our mind was the fact that the music has to stand up years from now. It has to stand up even after they forgot what we did on stage.'

ERIC JOHNSON'S EPIPHANY IN THE STUDIO FOR EUROPE LIVE

Eric Johnson's Epiphany In The Studio  For Europe Live

Dallas, TX - June 24, 2014. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands  takes a trip to Austin via the new album Europe Live  to visit with guitar wizard Eric Johnson.

By 1980 Eric Johnson was already developing an almost mythical reputation as a spectacular guitar player, enough to garner the cover story of Guitar Player without any record deal.

It was 1990 that Eric Johnson broke out of cult hero status among simply guitar cognoscenti and nabbed those two universally recognized standards of success in popular music, a million-selling album with Ah Via Musicom and a 1991 Grammy Award for his hit instrumental 'Cliffs of Dover'.

For the first twenty-five years of his solo career, Eric was famous (or notorious) for disappearing into the recording studio for years at a time, but EJ had a major musical epiphany which he shares with In the Studio host Redbeard while discussing the rippling 'Zenland', the tasty cosmopolitan Wes Montgomery nod 'Manhattan', the heavy 12-step anthem 'Last House on the Block', the dizzying instrumental from the Tones album entitled 'Zap' and his signature hit 'Cliffs of Dover' all from his new live album Europe Live.
'It was more interesting for me to hear some of the aspects of that (live recording) than it was to listen to some of my studio records, because it didn't feel as stiff and thought out and clutched so tightly. It's something that just happened naturally.'
